I had a CT scan last night and the tech said I shouldn't breastfeed for 48 to let the contrast material leave my body. How can I know if this recommendation is accurate or if it's overkill? Does anyone have experience in this?

Baby is only 5 days old, so I'm worried about ruining his latch.

I've breastfed my kids after many a CT scan and MRI with contrast media. I know that the radiology dept is supposed to tell you that you're not supposed to breastfeed for x number of hours after getting contrast media as they've been telling me that for 7.5 years now, but they also aren't familiar with breastfeeding pharmacology. Did they happen to tell you the name of the contrast media? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any that's not okay as they give MRIs and CT scans to brand new babies! If they didn't tell you the name, I'd call and get the name and you can post it here to ask and one of us with Thomas Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk can look it up for you. Here's a link to that page on his website:

You can also look it up on the lactmed database here
once you have the name. But usually one of us with a copy of Hale's book is around too.

thanks for the reassurance! I'm guessing it was iodine, since they asked if i was allergic. i don't know if that is specific enough
