I got a pretty nasty infection back in December while DS was still nursing. It was mastitis with an abscess (so goes the diagnosis). It cleared up, but I still have the lump in my nipple. I am assuming it is probably a cyst or perhaps some scar tissue or something along those lines...
I wouldn't really care, since it doesn't cause me any trouble and does not change in size or anything, but I am pregnant again and due in Septemeber. Since this lump is in my nipple, I'm concerned it will cause problems with LO latching on properly. I'm also concerned it will have an effect on my milk flow - and therefore I end up with mastitis again because this thing is blocking flow!
I was seeing an OB and I asked her about it and she said not to worry since it doesn't cause problems for me and that it will only block PART of my milk flow. Gee, that makes me feel better! lol Needless to say, I do not trust her opinion and do not think she really gives a hoot about BFing!
Once we find a MW we like I will ask about it again and hopefully get some more info. But I was wondering if anyone here had experience with anything like this and how it turned out?
If I need to have this drained, removed, or messed with in any way I'd rather do it before baby comes! Because of it's totally inconvenient location in my nipple, I won't be able to nurse on this breast if any procedure is done... not until it's healed. Not nursing on one side for any length of time that early on will kill my supply on that side!! I plan on nursing for as long as possible (nursed DS for 2.5yrs), but if I can only nurse from one breast, that will be difficult!
I got mastitis three times in a row around 18 months due to AE losing interest in breastfeeding, she went from nursing for 10-15 minutes after nap and before bed time to 10-20 seconds before bed time, thus causing the blocked milk ducts. Although the pain was horrible, i was sweating prefusely and pretty much bed ridden I really wish I was still breastfeeding, just at night.
