My son is 23 months old and he loves his nursies. We have finally gotten to the point where he doesn't fall asleep nursing (yay!) and he can make it through large portions of the night without nuring. Generally if he wakes up I can get him back to sleep without nursing, until around 4 or 5 am, then he really needs it. This is normal, and while I would like to eliminate night nursing all together, I am ok with it. At least he's no longer nursing for over an hour to go to sleep and then waking up every 30 -45 mins for more.
But now that he doesn't nurse as much at night he wants to nurse constantly during the day. I am a stay at home mom and I am home with him all day (I also have 3 older kids to care for). Everytime I sit down he wants to nurse. Literally. Every. Time. I have a bad back and I cannot stay on my feet all day (nor should I have to!). Sometimes I really do have to sit down and if I am in pain, the obsessive nursing is extra irritating.
He also gets very demanding for nursing when I am preparing meals. I could have just given him a snack, he could be completely engrossed in play with a sibling, but the minute he sees me working in the kitchen it is over. He is crying and probably screaming for nursies and will not let up until I stop what I am doing and just give in. If I don't let him nurse then our family dinner is a scream fest and he won't eat anything (and if I let him nurse he gets full and still won't eat anything). This kid needs to eat more food!
And here he comes right now.... "nuss, nuss, nuss? NUSS!!!!" Arg! I have been planning to start weaning him next month after he turns 2. But he is so obsessed with nursing that I am now not sure if I should attempt it or not. I think it will be really difficult and hard on the whole family. But his constant need to nurse is really difficult and hard for me to deal with. I would let him nurse longer than his 2nd b-day if we could get to a point where it's manageable for both of us.
So, I guess I just need some support and some advice. I have dealt with this with his older sisters in the past, but I was younger and more patient then (or something!) and it seems like they weren't as super into it as he is at this age. How can we get through our day without me having to be on my feet all day to avoid being assaulted by a boob obsessed toddler everytime I sit down? Should I just go ahead and start weanign him now? Is this daytime nursing frenzy an unavoidable result of less night time nursing? What should I do? Thanks.
