Okay, I've let this go on too long and now I'm paying for it.  DS refuses to open his mouth very wide to latch on and it's causing a lot of soreness.  ANY tips and tricks to get him to open up at this point would be so welcome.  It's getting to the point where I'm almost dreading nursing because it's so uncomfortable.  :(

Have you tried putting the nipple basically at his nose? He'll have to stretch for it and it may help him open up without a fuss. Good luck!

Does La Leche League have a chapter near you? Sometimes, having someone to see what you are doing can help so much. Otherwise, I really recommend the cross cradle hold for mamas struggling with latch since it gives you so much more control. http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/lv/lviss1-2008p16.html
