My LO will be four months old this Thursday. We had major issues in the beginning, which were my fault. It took a lot of time and effort, but he has been exclusively breast fed for over two months and is still gaining weight on the high end. My question is this. Up until the last couple of days, I was engorged in the mornings and was able to pump 3-5 ounces after feedings. Now I'm no longer engorged and am lucky to get an ounce, if anything, after feeding. LO also seems fussier at the breast, although he is still pooping and peeing as usual. I take no medications (just Motherlove herbal tincture), and my diet hasn't changed. There is no way I could be pregnant. Any ideas? I just keep putting him to the breast, but i'm sooo anxious. Thanks.

Supply usually levels off around 3/4 months. Mothers body then produces what baby needs without the surplus. Many women may erroneously believe their breasts are 'empty' around this time but they truly are not. If baby is still gaining and producing plenty of wet and soiled diapers, you may want to consider possible teething pain, ear infection or other possibilities.
If your supply HAS indeed tanked put baby to breast often, as you are, an infant's frequent suckling will stimulate more milk production and over several days, your supply should increase. There is no maximum, baby may feed as frequently as he wishes. Good luck and job well done for continuing through the hardships.

BTW, did your period happen to return? If so, some women note a temporary decrease in production around that time.

Thank you. Yes, it's returned but I just had it.

Yeah, I weighed him on Tuesday and he had gained 27 ounces in 24 days. I intend on weighing him tomorrow since I'm going to the location anyway for a support group meeting, to see if there are any more recent changes. It bothers me that my supply seems to be up and down. I can't even relate it to anything, that's what's so frustrating. Yes, my period does affect it (going to get some calcium now though) but that's not the only time I notice a drop. I'm glad he is gaining well overall, though.

Thank you for the update. Good luck, please keep us posted.

He had gained another 7.5 ounces this Saturday, four days since the last weigh. I'm betting his tummy was full since I just fed him. Even so, 3-4 ounces in four days is really good.
