My daughter is 9 months and is still happily breastfeeding.  For the most part, we've had a great breastfeeding experience.  My plan all along has been to breastfeed for the recommended year and see how we're both feeling after that.  At this time, it looks like I'll continue past the year.

Baby's doctor is in full favor of an extension.  Husband is in favor of it.  My community is very supportive and encouraging (I guess I live in a great area.)

But other members of my family, parents, in-laws, cousins save for one, are all somewhat weirded out.  No one is critical or condemning of the idea for extension, but even though they are all in favor of breastfeeding they can't comprehend why I would want to go so long.  I often here "Are you going to be one of those moms who is still breastfeeding when she is 15 months?"  My answer "Probably".

Any tips on how to respond? I'm not feeling like I have to be on the defense, but I'd like to make everyone feel more comfortable with it.

Ha! They totally sound like my family.  Granted, I had a lot of trouble in the beginning, so that has probably added to their skepticism. My son is six months now.. I cannot wait till he's 2 years old, to see the looks on their faces when he's still nursing! Anyway. It sounds like you are handling your family well. When they ask questions just smile and give one word answers. You don't owe them any explanation. And nursing at 15 months is nothing compared to much of the rest of the world. It's mostly the U.S. that thinks "ewww boobies!" when it comes to feeding babies. Sad.
