Hi all, just wanted to share our breastfeeding story, we have had our fair share of difficulties and challenges but I am so happy we made it through them!
Our baby girl was born at 30 weeks weighing in at 2lb 13 oz.
I had been on progesterone to try and prevent preterm labour which didn't seem to help, and I was concerned it may have delayed my milk coming in but lots and lots of skin to skin with baby, and the help of the preemie setting on the medela pump, it came in.
All was going ok with expressing and ng feeding when very suddenly I became unwell. Mastitis! And sepsis
Resulting in a two day stay in hospital on iv antibiotics.
Then, finally baby was strong enough to have a go at breastfeeding - she couldn't seem to latch!
She was found to have tongue tie, which they divided, but it didn't seem to solve the problem.
She would be rooting and trying so hard and getting so frustrated, so we tried nipple shields, success!
So we then stayed together on a transitional care ward to wean off the ng, onto full breast feeds, and at last, she came home weighing 6lb 6oz.
Happy, happy day
But then her weight gain slowed down, possibly due to her still having a PDA, so we needed to supplement.
She was a smart baby and decided breastfeeding was much nicer than bottles though, so we found the supplemental nursing system, which was our God Send!!
Now her weight was tracking along nicely and so we continued.
We have just celebrated her first birthday
And we are still breastfeeding!
Just wanted to share that despite our many obstacles and challenges we have persevered and I am so happy we did.
I'm happy to continue until she is ready to self wean. Xx
