Hi all,
My baby is about 24 days old today. I am a first time mother and completely lost. Baby was born at gestation week of 37week + 2 with the weight of 2.49 kg. In the first week, her weight dropped to 2.26 kg and she had jaundice as well. Admitted her for photo-therapy treatment twice and she is now 2.7 kg(with clothes). On 7th of June, her jaundice level was 194 and on 14th June, it was 232. I am so heartbroken, jaundice level was supposed to be dropping. Anyhow, coming back to the breastfeeding, Dr has initially told me to supplement with formula at every feed if she is still hungry. However, it looks like she is ALWAYS hungry after every feed. I am caught in between giving her only breast milk and listening to elder's advice of replacing one meal with formula. I am also confused with this whole nipple confusion, the DR told us to spoon feed or use a feeding cup, but my mother who is helping me is afraid of doing so as it might lead to choking so we have started using the bottle. I also gave several times my pumped breast milk in a bottle. It's all so messed up, I can't hurt my mother, I try to control my emotions, but I feel so stressed at the same time, wanting the jaundice to go away, baby to put on weight..and arghhhh...
I have to start fresh, but my baby is crying after every breastmilk feeding, why. Is she not latching properly, I thought my breast feels lighter after feeding her..but even then she cries, I notice that she latches better on the right breast and not so much on the left breast. My fav position is the lying down, but that's no so practical during the day.
I have heard about deep latches, I watched videos, none are helping, I feel like, my sitting position is wrong, I feel like, my breast is too big for her...Her poops and pees look normal, I change her diapers 3 to 4 times a day. I want to breastfeed her, but at the same time, I need her jaundice to just disappear and I have been reading that supplementing with formula helps. I am just so confused, she is underweight, and my parents are telling that formula would allow her to put on weight. How do I tell them without hurting them that breastfeeding would do that( would it ).
