Today was my classroom's library day. All of my students come from homes with 2 or more children. Many have baby siblings at home. Some of of my girls found a book about a toddler and his new baby sister. It was lovely...I need to buy it myself!

Anyway, there was an illustration of the mother nursing the new baby. The girls asked me "Mrs. B, did you do--you know--THAT with your baby?" I glanced over at the picture. "Yes," I replied. I could feel the excitement/relief escape from the girl sitting closest to me. She said, "My mom does that with my brother." Quickly and neutrally, I explained that was how I fed my son, and that he didn't drink milk from bottles. I moved on to another group of students while the girls began chattering about babies and what they eat, etc.

I'm glad I told them.

Yay! And how nice that the library had this book! I would compliment the librarian (full disclosure: I'm the daughter, step-daughter, and sibling of librarians)!

Good for you! I hope you also gave them a better word for it than "THAT".

What was the book?

That's great! It would have been cute if they talked about remembering nursing themselves

How wonderful!!!

I'm intersted to know what book it was, too!

We have a couple books that I'll be reading with my kids soon. They're both by Robie H. Harris:

Happy BIRTH Day!
and
Hi New Baby!

Both show baby nursing at mama's breast. Happy Birth Day! tells about baby's birth (with a doctor and nurse) and at the end baby sleeps between Mama and Daddy. Hi New Baby! tells of a big sister's inital dislike of and curiosity about her new little brother and how she grew into accepting and loving him.

Mama to A (12), Z (11), H (9), C (5), A (3) and 4 angels.

My daughter has always loved that picture in the book. We got it when she was 1 (she's over 2 now) and it's remained a favorite. And she gets so excited about that picture.

Good for you! There are 22 grandchildren on my husbands side, and I am the only one who has breastfed my 3 boys. I love to make a point of breastfeeding infront of my nieces and nephews. I answer any questions they have and let them know how much I love breastfeeding my babies. I hope that they will be influenced by this!

I tried to link but it didn't work.

Hello Baby! is the title of the book, and the author is Lizzy Rockwell.

Edited to remove bad link.

You are braver than I! My 8th graders always wanted to stayin my class room at lunch but I would shoo them out so I could feed ds. They didn't get it. Sometimes they'd argue "but we won't bother you, we just want to use the internet!" I just can't bring up my breast with my students!

When I taught first grade, we were reading about a baby whale and a girl says, "if there is no doctor to cut it out, how will the baby whale be born?" I didn't want to talk about whale vaginas in class!!!

I nursed in the back of my sisters first grade class a couple of times. She welcomed it as a chance to talk about normal mammalian behavior. She had some books ready to go.

Yaaahhhhoooo! Normalize them ASAP!
