I cant tell you whats happening or why but I can say my dd did the same thing! We just kept going - try try again. But sometimes it was more like cry cry again for me! My midwives kept coming over to check her latch - it was fine. Hows her latch? I'm guessing only one side hurting might be from positioning in relation to your favoured hand. eg: if your right handed. Are you in touch with a midwife that can help you out?
Laura
Congrats on your new babe!

Is your sore nipple flatter than the other side? I had worse soreness on one side, too. My baby just wasn't latching as well. Definitely get some help! One thing that worked for me was to begin nursing on the easier, more comfortable side. Once her hunger was relieved a little and her sucking was gentler, she didn't struggle as much with the more difficult side. With time, too, this gets a whole lot better, because your nipples get drawn out.

Sometimes it's the nipple size or shape. Sometimes it's the difference in letdown/milk delivery speed.

Sometimes the baby just prefers one side, maybe b/c of how they were lying in utero? They like having one cheek down, one up. Start on the preferred side for a few mins, then *without flipping her body around* slide her over to the other side, so she ends up in the football hold on that side. Make sure and use pillows for comfort.

If it's letdown that is too fast, try lying down for nursing. Or nurse in a semi-reclined psosition, so the milk has to go "uphill."
