I went to a Cesar Milan lecture today - he is the "Dog Whisperer" who trains Oprah and her dogs - and got a great tidbit I thought I would share.

At the start of the lecture there was a talk by a holistic vet from Colorado about nutrition. He mentioned that some in the phsyciatric community are begining to think that the rise in violence amoung children and teenagers is due to the fact that so many of them were fed formula instead of breastmilk. They believe that formula was/is lacking in specific nutrients so important to brain development that the lack of these nutrients could actually impact behavior in such a strong way! I think it was DHAs but I cannot remember exactly (swiss cheese mommy memory).

I know we all know breastmilk is best but I love it when it is reaffirmed in such a serious way!

Not to defend formula, but almost the entire baby-boomer generation was raised on formula, and there doesn't seem to be an inordinate amount of violence among that group (if there were, we'd be in trouble! ). In fact, more kids growing up now were breastfed (albeit for small amounts of time) than in the 50s and 60s. I'm sure formula has had a number of detrimental effects on people who weren't bf'd at all, but this theory just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

My two cents--or less!
