First of all I know you are thinking "some exclusively breastfed babies don't NEED to burp...well he DOES. when he doesn't burp he gets gassy and spits up a lot etc. he needs to burp.
he must be going through some hitherto unrecognized 4 wk growth spurt because he ate ALL DAY AND NIGHT. and today of course I'm engorged (
but he wouldn't burp for ANYTHING yesterday and I just let it go...i assumed he'd outgrown his need to *be* burped...and last night was pure torture. he was soooo gassy and in so much pain. I was never so happy to hear my ds fart as I was last night b/cuz every little toot meant a lil pain going away for my wee one.
and today (he's nursed 3x already since we got up and its not even 10:30am!) I just spent THIRTY minutes burping him...I did finally get a HUGE belch but why is it all of a sudden so HARD to get his burps out? this happen to anyone else?
also on the 4wk growth spurt i cannot wait until he can latch himself at night...I got maybe 2 hrs sleep...b/cuz he kept *losing* the nipple. *sigh*
: it makes me crazy, have you tried laying him across your lap? Well I see that you have other kids, so probably so but the only thing that works for dd is to put her really high on my shoulder and pat almost too lightly, and they come wailing out
it's like she is like stiffening up, saying be gentle or I just won't do it! ykwim?
I burb my DS sitting up. I hold him with one hand across his chest - my fingers go under his arms and I lift him up so his spine is straight - so the buble comes out easier. His head usually just falls forward and he tries to suck on my hand. He LOVES it and it takes short time to burb him. I also pat his back with my other hand.
Yeah, often even breastfed babies really need to burp, mine sure does. By 3 months he was burping himself as long as he was upright or on his tummy though. My DH was exclusively breastfed until over a year (not even solids) and he had a condition where he could not burp at all. He burped for the first time at age 2 and has done so normally since. Often he'd cry colic style because of it, someone even called CPS about it cause they heard the crying so much
. Sounds like yours can burp, it's just tough to get them up. It's a little early to hope he'll outgrow needing to be burped yet but it will happen. I'm sorry y'all are having a rough time and losing sleep, just take it when you can get it I guess.
my dh & i have been talking about how hard it is to burp x - especially as compared to how easily his brother burped! but man does x need it - and 20 minutes later, when we get that one big huge belch, boy is it clear he feels better.
dh has a trick. he sits x on his lap so he's almost folded in half with his bum hanging off dh's leg (supporting his chin/neck with his hand) and thumps him quite solidly. x burps within a minute or so. for me, it takes at least 5 if not 20 minutes to get a good burp out of him. i have some success with the laying across the lap position where one leg is pressing into his stomach, or laying him on my arm so the butt of my hand is pressing into his belly - sometimes instead of thumping him, i'll just carry him around like that, and eventually he'll burp.
also when he's miserable and my attempts at burping him haven't worked (patting, thumping, massage, folding, warm washcloth & all the other soothing techniques that helped with ds#1/colic), i've been giving him gripe water, which makes him burp and also pass gas more easily.

this is not my baby, but this is what I was talking about: http://dropshots.com/day.php?userid=...cdate=20060409 ecept that I hold him under his arms, not head. Baby can be facing any direction really, depending on how you turn him.

thanks yin yang and lucky mama!
we are always shopping for reliable purping methods
that was the only way ds#1 would burp. now of course he lets 'em out anytime but at first it was really hard to get him to. but sit him on my lap and straighten his spine and always always he would burp right away.
One way I burp her is to put her on my shoulder and pat, bounce my body a little, and then sit her on my lap, facing me, and she lets out a big one!
Now that she does tummy time, though, she usually burps herself. I remember being at 4 weeks
:... it's amazing how quickly time and phases pass!
