In a nutshell elimination communication is about reading your baby's cues about when she/he has to pee or poop, and taking her/him to the potty or holding her/him over a bowl, basin etc. so she/he doesn't have to go in the diaper. My son Evan is 8 months old, we've been doing EC since about 3 months. We generally get most of the poops and a good number of pees in the potty.
It's not about "potty training" in the sense that you're not trying to force the child to go potty, just trying to stay in tune with them and provide an opportunity for them to stay in touch with their bodily functions rather than train them to go in their diapers, then face the stress of having to re-train to the toilet.

My mother-in-law likes to say "sane is dull." Our family is definatly not dull!!!
You are so not wierd :-).
I totally understand feeling so weird without your baby sleeping with you. I have slept away from my babies just twice since my daughter was born, and DH was even with me and still I felt so lonely. Most people totally don't understand that, or miss the point, or just think I'm attached to my kids in some 'wrong' way, and I think that is kind of sad. I am so happy to hear other mamas who feel the same way I do :-)
I am definately trying EC with my next child. With this one (he is 16 months) we are kind of catching what we can but going with diapers, since we started thinking seriously about EC so late, but we're giving it a shot next time!
Mama, homeschooler, midwife. DD (13yo), DS (11yo), DD (8yo), DD (3yo), somebody new coming in November 2013.
Try LLL. If you don't like it try it again, or try another group. it may take a few tries to "click" with a couple women.
Sounds like you'll fit right in here Stick around, you'll love it! I know I do! Most people i know IRL think I'm beyond strange, and it is nice to come here and feel normal for a little while.
All we're doing is giving our babies the most love and care we can. How's that weird??
I am currently ebf my 13 mth old daughter.
made my own baby food
i follow my babies cues
we sign, etc.
Ugghghh....it seems like everyone thinks i am weird!
And here;s the biggest kicker of all ~~~~ YESTERDAY I STARTED practicing ELIMINATION COMMUNICATION~!
So, now i think everyone is like okay~ this woman is just crazy.
Anyway, i hope all of you can kinda of relate to me. oh and my typing sucks, cause i have to type with one hand and hold the baby with the other, or hold my boob with the other!
Honestly, your views fit right in here. And I find that the moms here are usually respectful of different opinions.....they'll tell you if they disagree, but usually politely intelligently and with compassion!
I love MDC!!
