I need to increase my supply! My baby is 6 days old and is hospitalised. Luckily they are allowing me to brestfeed but they are worried that my supply is too low to sustain her exclusively. I am adimant about exclusive breast feeding so what can I do to increase supply? Also the Dr. recomended that I could take reglan because one of the side effects is increased prolactin. does anyone have information about this? thanks!!!

I am so sorry to hear about your baby being in the hospital. I'm not sure how to help.

It may help to know why you say they are 'allowing' you to breastfeed? And why you are concerned about low supply? Maybe someone here has some additional info that would help?

It is unusal to have low supply but because many of us in the united states are so unfamillar with breastfeeding (doctors and nurses are no exception), many people think it unusual to be able to nourish our babies by ourselves.

I know that many moms who have true low supply issues can use reglan. I also know that one of the best way to increase supply is to breastfeed.

Hopefully some 'low supply' moms can give you more information.

I don't know what it's like to have a baby in the hospital but I imagine you must be beside yourself. Please take care and all my best wishes for your baby's quick recovery.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I was concerned about supply and pumping. I started taking Fenugreek. Prior to Fenugreek I was pumping almost 3 oz. and now I am over 5 oz. This is morning pumping sessions. But so far I am still pumping way more than 3 oz.

HTH.

I second the Funugreek. I also take Blessed Thistle and eat lots of plain oatmeal. Stay away from anything with cinnamon and drink lots of water. It also helped me by pumping every hour for about a week and make sure you pump for at least 15 minutes. Tis helps boost your supply. Check out kellymom.com they have A Lot of info on how to pump more. I would have posted it but I wasnt sure about the rules of posting from other sites. Hope this helps. And hope everything is ok with your baby. Good luck.

Why are they worried that your supply is too low? Are the weighing the baby to see how much she ate? Or are they just assuming you have a problem without really checking for a problem? I think from your signature link your baby was born a little early? A 6 day old full term baby has a maximum stomach capacity of 1.5-2 oz so they really don't need to eat a whole lot at one time to begin with. So if your baby was born a few weeks ahead of schedule, they shouldn't expect that she'd eat more than an once or 2 at one feeding.

yeah they were just assuming I didn't have enough milk. THis hospital does NOT have a LC but they have a Labor and delivery nurse that has brease fed 4 babies that came by. ANyways she thinks that my milk just has not come in yet but that baby is latching well and sucking well so I think she is going to get the Dr off my back. Lena (baby) was under agressive light therepy so they wouldn't let her out to eat. that is why I said that they are letting me feed her. Gotta love peds!!! I am working on getting her to breast when ever she is even a little hungry looking and at least every 1.5-2 hours. Hopefully my milk will come in soon and they will get off my back. WHen I pump I literally get 3ml. so just drops. gtg to feed.
