I have a six month old daughter who is EBF, my dh and I have decieded that would like to have a second lo with fairly close spacing. We are thinking about ttc around sept. or oct. That puts dd at around 9 or 10 months. My question is what are the chances I will still produce enough milk for her to still be almost entirely EBF? Or does production drop sharply?
Any mamas who have any info would be greatly appreciated. As much as I want a second I really value the importance of my nursing relationship and do not want to jeoprdize it. If it makes a diff I am very milky and have never had a supply issue.

Most women experience a very sharp drop in supply during pregnancy. I lost my milk completely by 12 weeks. Honestly, I'd hold off a bit more so ou don't have to supplement in your baby's first year.

I got pregnant while I was still nursing...my daughter was about 19 months then. She continued to nurse up until I was exactly 4 months pregnant. She weaned herself at 23+ months old. I had read on quite a few sites that around 4 months of pregnancy the milk either decreases drastically or changes taste so that its no longer appealing to the child that is still breastfeeding. Im now nursing my 8 month old still i only had a 5 month break...im not sure what would have happened if my first didnt wean when i was 4 months pregnant, I was suprised when she did..she was so attached to me up until then.

Honestly..If I was in your situation, I'd wait to get pregnant until your child was just about a year old..that way if there is a chance of your milk supply decreasing or something..You would have atleast completed her first year with nursing and not had to supplement with formula..You can just go straight to milk if its necessary.

HTH!

DS#1 was around 10 months when we started trying, and around 15 months we I got pregnant. I had no problem with supply (I had always had an abundant supply) but he slowly self weaned, I think due to not liking the taste of my milk. He completely weaned by around my 6th or 7th month and he was around 20 months or so (my dates are off, but I can't really remember). There was an obvious drop in his nursing at around my 4 month mark when he dropped down to a couple nursings a day.

If I could go back and do it again I would wait until he was closer to two (which is my goal for nursing, at LEAST two years old). Which is why we won't start trying for #3 until #2 is at least 2 yo, probably later though.

I don't know what the percentage of moms who successfuly nurse through pregnancy, but I have two friends who have. One has 4 kids and was nursing two at a time until the youngest was around 6 months (so 6 years of nursing, 4 years of nursing two kids, 4 pregnancies total). Her children were around 4 months, 12 months and 14 months when she became pregnant with the next child.

My other friend has 7 live children and she has nursed through many of those pregnancies.

DD was 12 months old. By the time I was 3 months pregnant, I'd experienced a significant supply drop, and she dropped the amount of nursing sessions per day from 10-12 to 3-4. She never stopped nursing, but wasn't eating much in the way of solids, so when she stopped gaining weight, we started adding a lot more yogurt to her diet. She did gain more after the colostrum returned midway through the pregnancy, and then after DS was born and they were tandeming. Good luck deciding!

I have nursed through 2 full term pregnancies and am nursing through my 3rd right now.

DS1 weaned at 3 years 3-4 months during his second pregnancy of nursing.
DS2 has nursed fully through one pregnancy, and is currently still nursing at 25 w 4 d in my current pregnancy.

Thanks for all the info mamas . My dp and I are going to wait until Sofia is a year. It is tough though because even then I do not want her to wean during the pregnancy. It is good to hear that it dosen't always happen.
