I am not sure if this the place to put this question so feel free to move it if it’s in the wrong spot.

I was doing a online risk assessment for breast cancer to see what it would say about how high or low my risk was.
:

I already knew Breastfeeding for a total of 12 months or longer can slightly reduce your breast cancer risk.

Which I had already heard of but when I finish the survey it told me:

Having a baby before the age of 30 and breastfeeding for a total of 12 months or more can reduce a woman's risk for breast cancer.

I hadn’t heard that having a baby before the age of 30 and breastfeeding for 12 months will reduce my risk – has anyone else?

Dose that mean that it makes more of a difference (or less of a risk) had I, had a baby and breastfeed for 12 months before 30? Or is it just the way I read it?

Hope this all makes sense

baltic_ballet,
Sadly for me, yes. In fact back in the Fall I donated milk to a UMass study designed to test that.

Do you know how these kind of studies work? I never got how they could tell that a mother under or orver 30 had more or less of a risk????

Is their some element of your milk in your milk they can look at to tell these things?

baltic_ballet,
I did ask that question of the woman that collected my milk. I got a CSI type answer involving epithelials.

I sort of filled in the blanks from there. I inferred that the epithelials of women who have had breast cancer are somehow different and that they will look for those types of differences and see if they are more pronounced in older women that did not have and nurse a baby before the age of 30.

I do not expect that they will be able to explain what causes that difference based on this study alone. It's a little disappointing in the sense that by itself this does not give women of all ages another reason to BF, perhaps just women under the age of 30. But it is good in the sense that it may eventually lead to a better understanding of cancer that could then lead to better prevention and possibly cures.

Thanks Cath for responding and for answering my questions

Basically what I got from the survey was that;

My low alcohol consumption was good but my weight was bad as far as risks go.

I dont have a family history of breast cancer but I do of colon cancer and diet, exercise and weight are a factor of both.
