Or am I having a let down problem. The last fews days there have been several nursing session where DS sucks and sucks and sucks while gasping. It seems almost like he can't breathe! But he keeps sucking and making this loud sound. I also am not feeling the let down during this time. Is his latch wrong? Could my milk be low? He is 6.5 months and not on any solids yet. FYI, I feel like i have PMS lately even though I only had AF once postpartum and that was 2 months ago! I mention that b/c I noticed nursing issues with DD when I had my period but since it hasn't come back yet I wondered if my body is going through something similar without the actual flow? Thanks!

For a few months after I got AF back, my supply would be really reduced the few days before I started bleeding. A day or two into AF and my supply would be normal again. I just made sure I ate and drank enough (water and mother's milk tea) and I nursed dd a lot, too.

The gasping and noises lead me to wonder if it's a let-down problem and not a supply problem. Personally, whenever it's been a supply problem babe sucks and sucks and then cries because there's nothing. Sometimes if the flow is too fast, though, he'll gulp and gasp. Is it possible he's just coming out of a growth spurt and he's getting more milk than he needs?

Also, he's 6.5 mos: is he maybe teething? For us, whenever anything's amiss from teething to ear infections to my period, he has troubles.

If you're concerned about supply (and it won't hurt anyways), then head to your local Walmart/Meijers and get a bottle of fenugreek. Directions are right on it, but it's typically 2-3 capsules 2-3 times a day. The rule of thumb is that you'll know it's working when you keep smelling maple syrup (in your urine and sweat). I also keep Mother's Milk tea around to drink a couple of cups here and there.

Keep us posted!

Are you drinking any alcoholic beverages? I was told by my BF teacher at a class that it was ok to drink after the birth. So at about 4 months, I started to have a beer a day. This had a massive effect on my let-down reflex. It was about 3 weeks before I figured it out, I was starting to think I was drying up.

I got a milk supply tea, with fenugreek and drank it 3 times a day like it said, but it didn't help much.

AFter I stopped drinking any alcohol, my let-down went back to normal. Kinda sucks, I was looking forward to drinking a beer every now and then after the birth, but it has a bad effect on my supply, so I'll have to wait it out.

Does your little one have a cold??

A stuffy nose can make it hard for them to breathe while nursing.

Thanks for all the ideas/tips. The gasping seems to be better now. I do know that certain times of day my milk is abundant, like a forceful let down and DS pulls off and I spray everywhere! Maybe the times he gasps he isn't getting the strong flow he expects? I have some mother's milk tea and try to eat oatmeal a few times a week. Also, I rarely drink alcohol(had champagne on new year's) and have 1 cup of coffee per day and water for all my other beverages. No sign of teeth or AF yet! The groeth spurt idea could be a possibility. We just had his 6 month check up and he weighed 20 lb 8 oz and almost 28 inches, so he's pretty big I think! Thanks again!
