My baby is now almost 8 weeks old and I still have to use the cross cradle hold doing the 'breast sandwich'. What gives? As soon as I remove my hand that's been doing the breast squeeze, DS unlatches. Is this normal?
I don't know if it is normal or not, but we are having the same problem (DS is 8 weeks today). If DS is very hungry he will stay lacthed through the transition, otherwise he doesn't. When he does stay latched he loses it as he slows down.
If you try to latch without doing the sandwhich (easier when they are a bit older) and just make a divit above the nipple with your thumb to get a nice asymmetrical latch, then when you let go of the breast they don't pop off. It's all about not lifting the breast up to latch.

Great advice! I will give that a try at the next feeding.
I couldn't nurse in any position but the cross cradle until 2 months or so. It gets easier when they have better head control. I think it's normal for him to unlatch like that. I usually do what PatioGardener mentioned, it makes it easier I think.
I have large breasts and had difficulty with my DD coming off when I let go of my breast. I found that if I put her arm under my breast and aiming around to my side (if that makes sense....) her arm would help to keep my breast in position.

Im going to have to try also not lifting the breast to get my dd latched. Everytime I let go she unlatches..

Pinching the breast just a tad behind the areola so the babe doesn't have to open quite as wide to get a good latch.
We were ONLY able to cross cradle while my 'free' hand did the breast sandwich until somewhere between two or three months. It really does get easier as babe gets older. Try to keep the breast in the same position. (I would always slip just a little - but enough she couldn't maintain a latch) One day it just started working for us.
