I don't have BP but my postpartum depression was severe, and Zoloft helped me be a better mom. Some gets in the breastmilk, but like my midwife said, "It's better to have a happy mom with a little Zoloft in the Breastmilk, than to have a bad mom with perfect breastmilk."

as far as BF'ing goes, I find that it really helps calm me, make me focus, and really take advantage of looking into my sons eyes... I find I always take a deep breath when he latches on...quite the calming agent...

Check out Depression Free for Life. It highlights alternatives for dealing with depression. Not sure about the bi-polar aspect, maybe that too.

Is it possible to just do the Prozac until you're done bfing?

Yes! Like I said I have good days and abd days. I am hoping to just stay on the procax, BUT I really don't think I can make it for the next 2, 3 , 4 years with out my meds.

I have very minor BPII and was on trileptol until I decided to get pregnant. Everything I read about it said that you should weight the affects of not taking the meds vs. taking them. As in, if you are going to commit suicide, it would be better for your child to have the meds in the milk than not have a mother. Drastic example but that is the reality for a lot of BP people. At least with trileptol, I am pretty sure that the worst time to take it is when the baby is developing. So if someone was absolutely needing meds and they were at 6 month it is better than taking them from conception.
I have been med free for over a year now and have found that I need fats in my diet. I take really high quality cod liver oil and can tell a difference within a few days of not taking it. Also there is some virgin coconut oil that I find extremely helpful. That is by garden of life. It is expensive but worth it. I even fry my eggs in it sometimes.
to you and to you for taking such good care of your little one.

I have mild bp2 and am extended bfeeding my now 3 yr old.
I started taking Depacote as a mood stabilizer when she was 2, along with effexor. (before 2yrs old I didn't need anything since before becoming pregnant.) Btw, Depacote is not okay when pregnant.

Aso, you could try Dr. Hale's online or call LLL and ask if anyone has his book

Some of this information may be helpful: http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.hints.html

Unfortunately, mood stabilizers are a troublesome group of meds, as you know. The Omega 3's are really worth a shot, as they have mood stabilizing effects. (unlike the other suggestions, which are effective against depression).

Research is great. Changes in your diet, lifestyle, exercise are all really helpful, but sometimes you need meds to at least get back on track. It's a hard decision and finding real answers is hard. I applaud you for your hard work!
