You are 400 words closer to your goal than you were yesterday.

Have you seen the video on the NaNo page? I think the guy said that by week 3 or 4 you'll have an idea where you want to go with it. It's all good.

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been looking forward to this for a few years and I would really like to win on my first attempt. I'm just blocked

So, here I am, avoiding my NaNo files because I had a rotten day and now that DD is finally asleep, I'm not sure I want to hang out with my characters.

Uh, I have to spell stuff right. I can manage to make grammatical errors, but I can't handle leaving typos. Of course, I'm sure I'll leave some that I don't notice, but I like the squiggly lines!

I started a file of all this stuff before I started actually writing. I would totally forget it all if it wasn't stored somewhere.

Sigh. All right, back to the coffee shop that Monday in May ...

So this is going to be another slow start year for me in NaNoWriMo. -sigh- Serves me right, I did no planning till Halloween... so now I am just keeping up with my daily word count.

My poor DD did not get to planning either, this is my fault though. She is only 10. She up still, past midnight, working on her word count. She is close to meeting her word count though at least!

Tomorrow I think her and I will spend our homeschooling day actually using the youth nanowrimo workbook to flush out characters. Poor kid came into my bed room a short time ago with tears in her eyes, guess her main characters parents died and it is making her very sad. Goddess I love her, she just feels so so much and has such a great heart. Her main character is a cat by the way. Some how that makes me feel even more sad for her.

Wishing you all lots of writing time tomorrow with perfect tea/coffee/water and weather!

That is so sweet.

Last night I ended starting a completely new piece and the words started flowing. I think this is what's going to work for me. The other two that I had tried to start wre maybe a little too personal and I couldn't get past the yucky feelings to concentrate on telling the story. This new one is much less personal.

2,825 words thus far. But I'm just finally putting on the computer what I've had on paper for some time now.

Wow, this thread is so long already! I guess that's what happens when you get a bunch of writing mamas together.

I am starting today - a day late, don't know why this didn't occur to me in October. I'm not looking to win, just looking for some motivation to make myself write. I have three novels in progress that are just begging to be finished and now that I have no job, I have no excuse. So here's to actually finishing something!

This happened to me this morning! I sat down to write today and out poured a completely new story. So I'm running with it. I've come to like the other story I was writing, but I think I'm setting it aside. Although I am a major multitasker. Maybe my brain is trying to force me to multitask my novels as well.

Happy Day 3! I made it to 5300 last night after a slow first day. Here's hoping the story keeps flowing today!

Love WorD. I bought the desktop edition and am loving it. Can't wait to try the word war feature, either, but my friend is studying for her exams, so that will have to wait until December! I usually use WorD for getting into my characters heads, rather than actual prose, but it does help get me into the place I need to be.

Then, after about 300 words, I decided I wanted to go in a totally different direction. I thought of a genre and some scenes came to mind, but still no solid plot in that direction, either. Now, I'm not sure which one to run with!
Which one did you run with? I changed mine an hour before kick off and the first day was challenging to say the least, but I'm starting to hit my stride now.

My DH told me to try Scrivener. I am loving it. So many awesome features! My favorite is the fact I can drag media files into the binder, but there's so much I haven't played with yet. Can't wait to get the full program, and 50% off is a great incentive.

I am really liking this so far! I had no idea what to write about, so at midnight on 11/1, I just started writing about a random incident from when i was 19 and working in a restaurant in a tourist town in CO... thought it wasn't novel-ish at all. Then suddenly the next morning when I got back to it, I felt like i broke through something and started to see where the general story should go. Sort of semi-autobiographical, except sort of an alternate version of my life story, if certain things had happened in a different order. I'm having fun, even if it is total crap right now, I think if I stick with it, there is some real potential! Although my left hand is a bit annoyed at all this one-handed typing while rocking/ nursing a baby...
Sounds good so far! I could not have survived last year without my nursing pillow. I think I wrote almost all 50K while NAK (or baby sleeping at keyboard).

NaNoWriMo is also about writing on the fly... go ahead and write those scenes you thought of.. hopefully the plot will follow... Last year I wrote things like "and now the traumatic thing happens, some how... and is somehow resolved.." and then I proceeded to write the chapters that come after the problem is resolved, because that is what I was inspired to write... I'm only now figuring out how that traumatic stuff happens, but still have no idea how it will be resolved but I know I will figure it out in time... so for now I keep writing ... Trusting the kinks will work themselves out eventually...

Kym
I wrote my 2007 NaNo novel non-chronologically. It worked for me. It was much easier to write the scenes that came to me than trying to force scenes I wasn't feeling.

I found myself freezing last night every time I went to write my MC's name. I wonder if that's a hint that she needs a name change??

Awww! Well if her story can affect her that way as she's writing it, I bet her readers will feel the same. I wish someone in my life had supported and encouraged me in my desire (need?) to write at that age. Would have saved me the years of being embarrassed and ashamed of it... Here I am almost twnty years later and I still struggle with that

I have had to deal with that before and it can be like running into a wall when facing things too personal and emotional. I get all torn about keeping some details as real as they where and yet trying to keep the piece fiction.

I use NaNoWriMo as a form of therapy every year and really do have characters to mirror "those" people I have come across and they find the most interesting ways to die.... This is not my normal personality and too morbid and "wrong" for me 11 months of the year but during NaNo, someone has to bite the dust right? I have to be careful though to do so light heartedly and not let that pull the story down.

This year is hard... I am writing a story for my oldest daughter, a gift for her 11th birthday next August. Taking the people she knows, making them characters a bit different, and sending them into a whole new world. She was a late reader and still does not enjoy it, I think she is waiting for that one book that pulls her in and I am in hopes I can write it for her. It has to be something she can connect with but I have to make it different enough that the differences do not hold her up and have her "Well that is not how our day would normally go or That is not what my brother would really do."

So what I am writing now is very personal, but with brighter emotions, and I just have to add the fantastic to it all.

How I am going to manage to kill anyone off is beyond me. I might have to settle for killing a few bugs.... LOL

Right now my routine is using my AlphaSmart when I'm away from home (I create a new file for each new scene), WorD when I'm at home trying to get caught up, and yWriter5 to tie it all together. I'm writing by scene right now. I'm hoping it will make editing easier. And yWriter5 can also be copied to a thumb drive so if I wanted to use a different computer, it's there. It also might be helpful if aren't writing chronologically.

ETA: yWriter5 also has daily, scene, chapter and total word counts running constantly.

That yWriter thing seems very cool (love that it's free). Thanks so much for sharing. If I can get it installed properly, I'm going to donate a little $ to that site because I think she did a great job of it.

Well I used Write or Die today (thank you for whoever mentioned it) and literally wrote my book 15 minutes at time (Flylady would be so proud!).. then took breaks to do housework, play with son, eat, etc... And I managed to write 2,682 words today doing that!!! unfortunately since I was behind when I started today that only puts me over by 129 words... But laundry got done, the house isn't falling apart, DS wasn't totally neglected, I voted, mowed the lawn etc... and I'm going to bed at a decent hour.. so it is all good!!

So do the gods punish us for editing this month? I'm up to 8,084 words and I feel like I want to edit sooo badly (mostly to add important details, not take away). I'm done for tonight but since I'm ahead of my goals, I'm going to use the yWriter5 program to start organizing details and planning ahead.

Is anyone going to go to their local regional NaNo events? There's one at a bookstore not far from me this Saturday. I don't have a lap-top, but I figure I'd bring pen and paper and (hopefully) meet others doing this IRL. I'm so psyched about it because I really am hoping to make some friends.

That is wonderful!! I liked Write or Die too. I think I'll keep choosing 15 minutes. I got something written, I didn't LOVE it, but it was a start. It also helped boost me up to 4, 092 words

okay I'm burnt out this morning. I went to sleep at 11 pm last night (bad idea). I am headachy and tired this morning and I don't feel like doing a darn thing today. I expected to crash and burn a little bit, just not this soon. Arrgggh. I don't want to do a thing - not cleaning, not writing, not anything. I should use this next hour to snooze before I have to pick up my dd from kindy, but I don't even want to do that.

I think I will, however, go get some tylenol for the headache.

{{hug}} I'm so sorry you feel yucky.

Write or die is my hero and new best friend!! I wrote 430 words in ten minutes. I'm sure that won't happen every time, but the I needed the kick to stop worrying about perfection and to just write. And it worked. The gradually redder screen plus the screeching when I stopped was PERFECT incentive to just. keep. going.

I have yWriter on my netbook. I haven't quite figured out how to make it work for me, yet.

That's awesome! I hope I can at least average 400 in 15. Yesterday was just at 500, which is crazy cool, I love it. And better yet, all I need is the red, the sound doesn't work for me, but the red is incentive enough.

Thanks.

I looked at the WoD earlier today. That kamikaze mode sure is funny (and yet, not). I have been goofing off the last hour, not resting or NaNo writing or organizing anything. I did blog about the plight of the novice writer, anbd I took the tylenol 1/2 hour ago and it's not working so I just ate some breakfast (leftover rotini and meatballs) hoping to avoid digging into the Halloween chocolate, but I feel my resolve weakening this very minute. I'm craving a Baby Ruth right now.

Hey completely OT, but where does one get the little "I'm blogging" sign for the signatures? I want one but not sure where to find it.

Thanks.

Miss Information - It's in the smilies. Erm... somewhere. Let me see if I can find it. lol I haven't tried the kamikaze mode yet. Do I dare?

Amanda - I'm using the top image at http://perilplanet.com/blog/2009/10/wallpaper/ currently but I might switch to one with funny and/or motivational statements like http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/3228/nanowrimo2.jpg

Found them!

Okay, I realize the first chunk of my writing is setting a lot of background up for the relationships between MC and Mr friend turned love interest and PITA LONG and complicated hiring process for the forensic job that will get MC out of her crazy mother's clutches. There's lots of scene changes and some good conversations going...but I am torn between putting in lots of details and leaving them out for the sake of moving the story along.

How much minimal detail is needed to get the ambiance of a scene? For instance, if they are at a restaurant, do I have to flesh out the place as if you were really there, or can I just focus on the two characters that are sitting at the table having a conversation?

Do you have to describe what the characters are wearing every time the day changes? Personally I could care less what they wear, but if I don't say something, you really can't picture what they are like without describing something about their attire.

In essence, what is the most important to focus on (at least for the first draft)?

I'm trying not to get too bogged down in details but at least this first go 'round cover the minimum basics to make some progress in the story, only I don't know what minimum basics would be.

I think because the span of time is so large (years) it makes my job a little difficult to focus on the minutiae.

Any advice for a newbie NaNo-er?

Oh, and thanks for letting me know about the I'm blogging smilie.

Can you be satisfied writing small details, and coming back and elaborating when you edit?

I'm leaving a lot of vocabulary to be desired in my first draft. When I edit later I'll make it a bit smarter.

Miss Info., I think it's better to focus on the dialogue and let the reader get a sense of the characters that way, especially if you've already done a little physical description earlier in the story. What they're wearing doesn't matter unless it's relevant to the current action. And you'll probably slip in little details about the characters' appearances throughout the story, when it's relevant - say, when another character notices something about a character's clothes or physical appearance. JMO....speaking as an avid reader and a very amateur writer!

Thank you so much, Autumn Breeze and ACsMom.

I used to be an avid reader for pleasure, then spent the last few years reading for personal research, so it's been awhile to figure out what's important. I'll keep both bits of advice in mind.

3,336 words so far, not as much as I'd like but I was really getting into it this morning.

In about an hour, I'm going to a local event. I'm kind of nervous, I don't know anyone in this town yet and have never really gotten together with any other writers (besides during college). I'm hoping its inspiration and also to meet a couple people.

MissInformation, I agree with what ACsMom said, its not necessary all the time. IMO, the reader appreciates the details but not all the time or it becomes too much. And a little left to the imagination does wonders for the book as long as its not no information at all.

This is my hope as well!

I have 5k words just to set up what a "normal" day looks like. If my story does not pick up soon...

Too much detail maybe and not enough action considering it is to be a book for my oldest...
