so i called a weekly in my town to see if they need a writer (i'm sort of new at this....i wrote for my college magazine and did a series for a daily) and she said......"do you do any freelance work? i don't need anyone right now but send me your CV......"what now? i don't get what freelance really means in this situation? does she let me know about a need they have or do i come up with a story and submit? sorry if this sounds dumb.....?!

I would send in the CV since she asked. I would consider submitting some story ideas as well.

A CV is a Curriculum Vitae. Basically it contains information on work history, skills, achievements, etc. Here's a link with tips for writing one. http://www.cvtips.com/

I got my start with a weekly paper in my area. I still write for them. My publisher sent me out on a trial story to cover a school board meeting. You could ask if the publisher of your weekly would allow you to do that. It gives them a chance to see not only your writing, but your ability to cover the story on your own before they commit to giving you work.

I'm glad someone else asked what a CV was, because I was going to have to. I've been a staff reporter and done a little bit of writing on the side. I'd never heard that term before. Thanks for the explanation, and the link.
