i'm trying to format my ss collection manuscript. i've never been so frustrated and helpless with a Word document.

-the tabs jump on me, no matter how many times i reset.
-it leaves some lines blank, no matter how i try to fill them with text.
-when i hit the backspace button fonts change in front of my eyes.

i converted the file to rtf, but it is not helping.

how do i clean it up so it formats nicely? are there setting to fix it?

HELP!!!

I don't have the kind of problem you've describe today, but I certainly have at random times in the past. Usually when I'm in a hurry or working on something important, or both.

So just what is the "document map" button and under what menu does it hide?

I'm on a Mac, if it matters....

document map is useful for very long documents, as it eliminates scrolling to find what you want to find. not sure what menu it is one, but it looks like a little document with a magnifying glass over it. when you click on it, you get a sidebar with the titles and main headings and some of the text, and you can click on them to jump directly where you want to be. i am sure most people know about it.

I also use Word on a Mac. To see the document map, select Navigation Pane under the View menu.

Oh, my life just got a whole lot easier. I have any number of very long documents that are work related, and it's always a major hassle to deal with the various sections when they have to be updated...

Thanks!
