Argh. I have the first names all set, but I've come to a scene where it is *required* (don't ask, I don't know why, I just feel that it is) that the main character be refered to as Mrs I-didn't-freaking-give-her-a-last-name-yet!

So....how do you come up with surnames? I'm writing a "Smith" in for now, but will need to go back and sub something else in, for sure.

Does your character have an ethnic background or nationality or does her husband? That could help you decide on a last name. Or you could look in the phone book and see if you can find one that goes nicely with her first name ,or one that clashes badly and make a little joke about that or something.

I usually look at words in a specific field, such as the horse realm (bridle, for example), and tweak the spelling (making it Brilden or something similar).
