I am interested in purchasing some new animals for my kids for Easter. They are 5, 3, & almost 1. We have quite a few Ostheimer and Michael Engelberger (from Nova Naturals) figures. These figures have held up extremely well especially since they are played with daily and have been dropped many many many many times. We have had many of them for over two years now, and besides a few nicks and dents, surprisingly none of them have broken. I am not sure if this is because there is not much detail in the carvings. They are pretty much a flat slab of wood carved in the shape of the animal…sort of like you took a cookie cutter and pressed it against the wood and out popped the animal. The Michael Engelberger figures do have more carvings and tapering than the Ostheimer, but does not appear to have as much as the Jalu ones or the beautifully detailed eyes. The Jalu ones look gorgeous in the pictures although I have not seen them in real life. Like I previously said, I am considering placing an order but would like some feedback as to the durability of the product beforehand. I do not want them to fall apart shortly after buying them. I would appreciate knowing how long you owned one of the items, how often and how is it used, the age of the little one who plays with it, if it broke or if the paint chipped, etc. Thanks in advance for sharing.
we have a bunch of them. 2 foxes we have had for a year and a half now and have held up to rough 6 year old boy play beautifully. The only problem was when a dog chewed on them, but any toy would have a problem with that, right?
Then ordered 2 cheetahs last June and they too have held up to rough 6 year old boy play (the cheetah and foxes battle often :lol )
This past Christmas we ordered a bunch more (zebra, bears, elephant, lions, tigers, hippos, etc) and I can't tell you how insanely beautiful they are. Not only are the relatively affordable compared to Ostheimer, and they have held up well (our only broken wood figure from play is in fact a Holztiger) but I like that I am supporting an individual family (Eric is as friendly as he is talented) and not a corporation (even a small one).
Hope this helps...
Do you mean Jalu?
We really like them, the eyes are a little weird to me, and the horse is disproportionately large. But they have held up equally well as all of our other animals. Dd especially loves the pig!

Someone new coming August!
We haven't bought figures from them, but we bought a barn, a sort of henhouse/rabbithouse, and a fence. We've only had them for a few months but so far they seem beautiful and durable, with a good smelling beeswax finish that you can reapply if needed. The colors are really appealing. I wish the fence pieces had a wider bases, because they don't balance well and they fall down, which is distracting during play. Next time I'd buy an Ostheimer fence, because the fenceposts are kind of triangular and wide at the bottom. The owners are really sweet to deal with and I suspect they would customize if you wanted something specific - like a different-shaped fence.
Do they have dogs? http://www.jalutoys.com I found this site for them, but don't see dogs. That's the next animal I'd like to get DS.
That's a great idea to put a wooden animal in Easter basket. It sounds so simple, but DS is only 16 months, so we're still trying to figure out how we're celebrating holidays. I love how many ideas the people on this board has.
