Hmmmm, while I am happy with any mainstream organization that encourages the limiting of media/screen entertainment for kids, it could be a whole lot better.
This article is about the advertising vs the effects that television have on the developing brain and imagination. I assume that were there fewer to no ads that kids watched, they wouldn't consider it a big deal. It also recommends limiting viewing to 2 hours a day!! Am I crazy or is that a lot??
Like I said, anyone that make people aware of any of the issues surrounding kids and TV is OK by me though. Something is better than nothing!
This is the same organization that has recently advocated no\nil\zero television before two years for all children.
I believe that we are at a turning point and thi is really the beginning of the medical and scietnific community viewing media influence critically. From a cultural standpoint it has made people uneasy for a long time, but now we are beginning to quantify its detrimental affects. I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more reports like this.
The Waldorf community is well poised to help people transtion from a media dependant to a limited and hopefully commercial free lifestyle.
In short, what this article means to me, is that I should be reacing out my hand towards parents who want to make a change for their children but don't know how, and if that means that they will limit TV to 2 hours instead of unlimited, perhaps that's the first step, and then entirely commercial free, and then entirely non-violent, etc... .
hmm, this seems positive but very limited, as pp stated. And what's with this:
"We'd like to see more birth control ads," Strasburger said, "and less ads for erectile dysfunction drugs because it makes sex seem like a recreational activity."
And what about the odd idea that it is okay for sex to be a bit of a mystery for children under, say, the age of 8 or so...recreational or not...as the case may be.
But I digress.
