I puked a lot last time (not this time, hooray!), and what worked for me was to keep a serving of unsweetened applesauce by the bed, and eat a couple of spoonfuls of it before getting up. I had to eat it all night too, to be honest. I didn't get food poisoning or anything, applesauce isn't all that dangerous. Raisins are also great for raising blood sugar gently but quickly.
I get things called "chunks of energy" in bulk at the co-op that are great--no refrig., protein as well as calories--not as bland as applesauce though, so I don't know.
