I was up all last night with intermittent, nonrhythmic contractions, and I was getting excited that maybe, perhaps, maybe I was beginning to get ready to have this baby! So, I went to my OB's today for my routine scheduled appt. -I'm 40 weeks this week - and I had awesome cervical changes from last week: 1-2 cm, 60%, could feel the baby's head with her finger. Yea!!

While she was in there checking, though, she sort of surprised me by sweeping my membranes. I was surprised she didn't ask, but as she was talking me through the exam, she said "And now what I'm doing is...." -- DH was holding my hand, and it was slightly uncomfortable but not painful. I was too surprised to be angry that she did this without asking, and after it was done, I began having stronger contractions nearly immediately, which was sort of exciting.

So, decided not to waste energy right now being mad at her for not asking....but have had contractions for the last 10 hours since my appt.!

We stopped on our way out of town to eat dinner and walk around the mall, and when nothing earth-shattering happened, decided to go home (home is 2.5 hours away from dr's office and hospital). I've been home now and able to sleep intermittently - am trying to let DH sleep, figuring I'll need him more later and would like him to be well-rested.

However, I'm having a hard time naming this experience...I think I'm laboring.

Wow - and I just said the L word!!! After all these months, it's so strange. Contractions have been anywhere from 4-5 minutes apart to 7-9 minutes. Right now, they're brief but about 6 minutes apart. Have been for the last few hours.

I'm hesitant to get right back up and go to the hospital - after all, with an "induction" of sorts, my body might be doing this for a few days, right?

I want to labor at home, but don't want to wait too long to get in the car and make the 2.5-3 hour drive (with 4 separate construction zones!! between here and there) to the hospital. So, I'm erring on the side of staying home as long as possible.

I think I'm in labor. Maybe? Possibly? Ten consecutive hours worth of waxing and waning contractions so far. Am I right to name this "labor"? or am I simply contracting in response to her stripping???

Sounds exciting. I think you are right to stay home a while longer. Especially since this is your first. With my first I had early labor that was "there" but not painful, they got as close as 5 mins apart and lasted 12 hours, when I went to the hospital they said I was at 1cm. When I really got going on the contractions that were making progress it took me 12 hours. So when people ask how long my labor was I tell them 12 hours. Because the first 12 was just early stuff that wasn't making any difference.

Anyway. I think you will know when you need to go. Being 2 hours from the hospital would be hard though.

Thanks for the support!

Unfortunately, I think I'm prodromal!! I got so excited last night...and the contractions petered out around 0900 .... and I got a few hours of awesome sleep. Mild contractions ~every 10-15 min throughout the day yesterday, and I'm back having really good contractions every 5-9 minutes tonight.

So we'll wait and see...hopefully for not a few more days...!!!

Very exciting.

I would bring it up with her. Let her know you don't want anything at all done without her telling you first. I think sometimes they don't consider sweeping invasive but she really should have asked before doing it.

Mom of a 7 yr old, 4 yr old, and 1 yr old. Wow. How did that happen?
