Apparently this is a new test, but my dr.'s office called yesterday (2 wks. after having the test done) and said that it came back positive that I'm a carrier of the Cystic Fibrosis gene. DH now has to be tested. If he comes back negative, then we're free and clear. If he comes back positive, then there is a 1 in 4 chance that this baby will have CF. But, the nurse told me that 9 times out of 10 the other person comes back negative. So, please send positive thoughts my way. I'm a little freaked at the moment!

please don't worry! i have a cf gene too, but the geneticist told me several genes can cause cf - so not only does dh need to be pos, he'd also have to be pos for the same cf gene.

Our psuedo-cousins both tested for cf (pos) while preg with their first. They ended up doing an amnio. I wonder if they knew that info that Clarity gave about the different genes causing it and those specific ones needing to match up??? so, They have pretty much decided not to have more kids. This sounds like great info for people-gives the numbers a way different tally, right?

That was told to me 3 years ago when I was having IVF with preimplantation genetic diagnosis for a different problem. They realized I had the CF gene at the very last minute and the Dr called me in a bit of a panic. So DH had to rush on down there and get tested. That's when they were telling me about the multiple genes (like 4 or so?), and that we were ok as long as he had a different one. I don't know if the screening most people get differentiates them, or how long they've known about multiple genes. But since we were deep into other genetic stuff, I trusted what they told me but I have never researched it myself.

I so understand how you feel! I am also a carrier, thankfully dh is not. A friend of mine didn't find out she and her dh were carriers until they had a CF little boy. I think that is the more shocking of the two ways to find out. You are in my prayers.

Did your dh get tested yet? The info from pp is encouraging.

I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

DH was tested last Friday. We have to wait about 2 weeks to find the results. The wait is killing me already!

Thanks for the responses. Based on these and things I've read, this is a little more encouraging than my initial thinking. I believe there are 4 sets of genes total and even if DH is a carrier, those sets of genes would have to match exactly. Even then there is a 1 in 4 chance of the baby having CF. I'm a little less worried than I was, but it's still a shock to receive news like that!

I am so glad to hear that I did not pull that bit of info out of the air! I know it's hard to wait...I found putting it all away in a little box in my mind and only pulling it out once in a while to worry helps get through this sort of waiting. I am sure everything will be ok for you!

I'm a symptomatic carrier for hemophilia A, and found out when my son was diagnosed at ten days. I'm pg again, due in mid-September. It's also a one in four chance, if the baby is a boy, it has a 50/50 chance of having the disorder. A girl has a 50/50 chance of being a carrier.

If it happens that you have an affected child, I'm here if you want to talk about raising a kid with a d/x. Best of luck to you.

It's about a 1 in 27 chance that any caucasian is a carrier. It's lower for any other ethnic group. That's better than the 1 in 10 odds the nurse gave you.

Your gene types do not need to meet up to have a child with cf. It's worse if they do, but home-free if they don't.

My 14 week appt. is on Thursday so I'm hoping that we'll know by then. Thanks so much for the continued encouragement and thoughts! I'll update as soon as I can!

I did decide I'm not getting further testing done (triple marker screening, etc.) b/c it's not going to change anything about this pregnancy so why worry for the next 6 months?

Miz-It's so good to see you!!
