Hi! I'm visiting from the January 2006 thread...

For those of you who are familiar with charting your basal body temperature, I've got an idea. As you know, when you are cycling your BBT will rise about 1/2 degree upon ovulation. If you become pregnant, the hormones will keep it elevated. I've heard that if you temp at the end of your pregnacy, you can predict the onset of labor fairly accurately because your BBT will drop to pre-ovulatory temperatures.

Would anyone be willing to temp and chart to see if this is true?

Thanks!

Ooh, fascinating! Never heard that. I will try to do this, but I shan't make any promises as I'm considering induction because of blood pressure woes. But if I go naturally, I would love to be part of your experiment.

Right now my average temp feels like, oh, about 150 degrees, but I'm sure it's not *quite* that high!

That sounds very interesting and I'd love to hear the results, but honestly, I would forget every morning until I was already up and about and had brushed my teeth. One of the reasons I'm on this board. LOL!

I bet it is true. I breed dogs and a sure-fire way to predict if the dog will go into labor in the next day is to check their temperature. If it drops about .5 of a degree, they will almost always have their puppies that day.

I always wanted to try, but unfortunately both of my labors were inductions due to preeclampsia.

If I can find my BBT I will try to give it a shot. I'm 37 wks 3 days and haven't temped since like 19 dpo!

(I'm "due" next thurs)

i can't promise that i'll remember every day, but i'll give it a shot out of curiosity.

To get a good BBT reading, here are the basics:
1. buy a BBT thermometer (about $9 at any drug store)
2. Keep it right near your bedside. If its the shake-down kind, have it ready the night before.
3. Try to take your temp at the same time each morning before rising, eating, brushing, peeing, etc.
4. Shoot for 3 consecutive hours of sleep before temping (I know it's tricky with full term bladders...) but temp anyway even if you did get up. Just know that temp may not be as accurate as others so make a note of it on your chart.
5. Keep a list of dates and temps or put them on a chart
6. Share with us!

Thanks for volunteering! Here's wishing some Easy Labor Vibes to everyone! ~*~.~*~.~*~.~*

Interesting. I never get up at the same time or I would help you. If there is any truth to this, someone could make alot of money writing a book on it. :LOL

Yesterday and today I am still above my coverline, so no labor I guess. Funny but we breed dogs too and I totally knew the thing about temp dropping in them. Feel stupid that I never made the connection myself. Hope it works!

I remember hearing some discussion on it on the Taking Charge of Your Fertility website years ago but they've had a crash and lost old threads since then so I think that discussion is gone. I don't remember any links on it at the time. There were people there that knew about dogs, though. I did a quick google search the other night and found mostly fertility stuff but no labor stuff. The one quick thing I did find was a bulletin board that had one question about it and one response that said the poster didn't know of any clinical correlation between BBT and onset of childbirth in humans. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, though, YK?

Thanks for doing it!

I can't believe you're already near your birthing time. I remember you from the Nursing Mamas Getting PRegnant thread... Congratulations!!!

Thanks, and ditto!

Pregnancy is weird... it drags and drags and drags and then you are like, "Where'd the time go?"

Well today I was way below my coverline, but I didn't sleep well (or at all) so I don't know if that would make my temp lower. I seriously doubt the baby is coming any time soon.

Hmm. Are you using your coverline from TTC? I wonder if you need some time to establish a new reverse-coverline? .1 degree below the preceding 6 temps? Of course, weird sleep and other disturbances would mess it up anyway and you'd use the rule of thumb to knock it out of the calculation...

...or maybe this is it!! Any baby yet??

Hope you get better sleep tonight and are well rested when the baby decides to make an appearance!

LOL...this would have been awesome if I could get 3 hours of sleep--before this one was conceived, I was nursing every 3 hours at night...and now, my 21 month old STILL wakes me up 1-2 times a night to nurse. LOL! I totally would have tried this too if I could get 3 hours of sleep in a row.

No baby yet. I use Ovusoft and it put me in the same cycle and says 247 DPO - lol. Anyway today I am still below my coverline but not as low as yesterday. I only have 3 temps from now that are above my c/l and now 2 below.

So can I complain to you when the baby still isn't here? You put the idea in my head... :LOL

I started doing this a couple of weeks ago b/c I'd heard about it on Ovusoft. I couldn't really find anyone who'd done it to tell me about it though.

My temps have been lower than my 2WW temps but still pretty steady. This am, I had a pretty good temp drop, but I had woken up a couple of times in the wee hours. I'm not going to get excited until baby pops out! LOL.

I have noticed that, even when I was cycling, I didn't necessarily need 3 hours of sleep in a row. My temps were a bit erratic if my sleep was interrupted, but still not dramatically outside the larger pattern. So, for those not getting 3 hours of sleep in a row before waking for the day, it still might be worth temping just to see.

Sure - anything to keep you temping for the sake of science... :LOL

Ooo! Was it a recent ovusoft thread? The one I heard it on was really old.

Today I was 1/10th above my c/l. Still way below my post-HPT+ temps, though.

I have been at my c/l exactly for several days until this morning when I was way above it. Maybe I am getting sick.

Is anyone having success with this?

Congratulations all you new mamas!!!

I know it's certainly not the first thing on your sleep-deprived minds right now, but I was wondering if anyone charted all the way through? Does it work?

Sorry, I didn't chart at the end b/c I was sure he was never coming and my temp was already so low. Sorry!
