So, the last few nights in a row, I have had a few hours of contractions in the evenings, from 5 to 10 minutes apart. These aren't painless Braxton-Hicks. They hurt! They're intense! Can any been-there-done-that moms tell me what is going on? I'm not overdoing it and I'm drinking plenty of water.

Your body is warming up for the big event!

But, just to let you know, this is very common for weeks before the main event. Change position and practice your coping techniques for when the real thing starts!

That has been happening to me, too. Try taking magnesium supplements if you're not already. RRL, too. Those can help diminish the intensity of the contractions and calm your uterus. They're helping me significantly. Drink a lot all day, not just in the evening, and when the contractions really get going, try a hot bath. None of this stuff will have a slowing effect if it's really time for your labor, but they'll help you in the meantime.

Your body is getting ready. One thing make sure you stay hydrated. Drinks LOTS of water. Sometimes you can have contrations from being dehydrated.
Good luck

Well, I had my first exam today. I'd told him about my contractions, and since he was doing group B strep today anyway, he went ahead and sort of did one. I say sort of because he said he couldn't tell me for sure how many centimeters I was dilated without "killing me" but that I was 80% effaced and he thought at least one centimeter dilated. Wow! He said that my cervix was too high for him to reach easily. Anyway, I know they say that doesn't mean anything, but maybe it does mean she won't be late? That sure would be good because it means my doula will still be in the country to be with us!

That's exciting, your body is definitely doing some work. I was 70% effaced and 2 cm dilated a week before Jakob was born so who knows...maybe in a week or so you'll have a baby in your arms.

Hi. I was due all 3 times in October! I remember my first pregnancy, it seemed like the last month, I had a lot of contractions at 5-10 minutes apart that wouldn't let me sleep, etc. But weren't "it"! You just have to use your intuition and when its "it" you will eventually figure that out. :LOL it IS different! Good thing is, it sounds like its slowly getting you dilated and effaced. I went into labor at 4 cm and 60% the first time. (I think. Other two were about the same, but I'd had bouts of preterm labor with them. ICK!)

Hope this helps!
