DH and I were thinking it could fill the void left by True Blood. I love Steve Buschemi and it looks like it could be interesting. Anyone considering it?

Ive been contimplating. I just know that its going to be good because most stuff by HBO is. The drama stuff anyway. Does anyone know, is it from the same creators as Deadwood? Cuz if it is, then NO. I HATED THAT SHOW!

But I have dexter coming too. I usually cancel one, and pick up the other, because they schedule the new seasons so well. This would cause me to have both going, and I dont know if I should have the added expense.

Decisions Decisions.

So, who watched? I liked it. I wonder what the relationship will be b/w the pregnant woman (that was sad btw) and Steve Buscemi's character. It must be significant if they keep on showing her in the pilot. I do like how he had her husband killed after what happened.
Anyone else? Thoughts?

I liked it. Some of it was a little hard to follow because I am not familiar with all of the history. But, pilots are always a little confusing to me . I definitely smiled when the cops picked up that woman's husband. It seems like there is going to be a thing between he and Steve Buscemi's character. It seems like he wants a baby.

Gina you have to watch because I need you to explain all the little details.

I enjoyed it. I think it will take a few weeks before I'm really into it, but it has a lot of potential. I liked them having the young Al Capone in it .

It definitely has potential, it was a bit hard to keep track of all the characters, but I am intrigued. Steve Buscemi was great and it will be interesting to see what happens with that abused wife/widow. DH is just happy we have something to fill the sad void on Sundays!

finally watched it last night. I think it will take me a few episodes to get into it as well, but I do love the attention to period details-the hats/clothing etc and I thought Buscemi's mistress was pretty funny (in a trashy kind of way) & I like the actor portraying Al Capone (He was Tommy from Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels) .... Anyone know the history behind the baby incubators on the boardwalk?

I really enjoyed the period costumes, too. I was also wondering about the incubator thing - it was weird, but I'm guessing there was some sort of historical basis for including it.

I had to go googling about it, so here's what I found

Quote:
Another quirky attraction was the “Infant Incubator Exhibit” across from the Million Dollar Pier. In the early 20th century, incubators for premature babies were a technological novelty–but hospitals needed funds to purchase them, and that required public support for the idea. To raise interest, incubators were displayed to the public with the tiny preemies still inside. “Baby Hatcheries” were found at state fairs, amusement parks like Coney Island, and of course Atlantic City. Admission was charged to view the tiny human babies in incubators as they were cared for by nurses.

Oh, I want to add something....I know Nucky said he lost his wife to consumption (?) but I'm wondering if maybe she was pregnant or if they had a baby that passed. That would explain his soft spot for the pregnant lady in the beginning, and also his interest in the baby incubators.
Just a thought!

OK, so I tried last night. I was on the phone, and came accross it and watched for a couple of minutes while talking, it was the scene where a woman is in a kitchen, children sitting around the table, shes cutting bread. A man is in a doorway talking to her and he begins to beat her. The little girl (About 2?) starts to cry, and I.CANT.DO.IT. That crap makes me want to puke. I hated Deadwood because of the vial treatment of women.

I get it. Its period adaptation. Doesnt mean I can stomach watching it.

That part was hard to watch. I think it's an isolated incident though, and the guy doing the beating got a good beating himself, so it kind of made up for it

Yeah, that was a tough scene to watch. If you kept watching, though, as others have said - there was redemption (more violence. . .but much easier to stomach, if you know what I mean )

If any of you really KNEW me, you would know that once the child started crying, the channel got changed faster then a shopaholic at macy's during a bogo sale.

I instead ended up watching my recorded episode of Ghost Adventures, and had to fast forward through half of THAT because it was about Ghettysburg, and the orphans who were tortured by some sadistic woman.

we're talking about the Gretchen Mol character-the showgirl, correct? that was my reaction as well and then I was trying to remember how old Jimmy was supposed to be in the show...so she was really young mother I guess...

I'm enjoying the show so far, although it is moving a little slow....I guess some of the story will be moving to Chicago for the next episode....

Not to me, but I wasnt paying as much attention as I should have. As soon as it appeared he was cheating on his GF, i kinda blacked out for a minute. Guess I should learn to not assume, eh?

no you're right - I rethought about the episode where Jimmy gives her the necklace and it wasn't clear till they started talking that she's his mom

I'm still watching, it is interesting but not riveting. we'll see if it keeps being kinda slow-moving...Barbie64g, I totally agree with you about the child crying scene, I always think, ok, everyone else is acting, but that 2 year-old is NOT ACTING!!!! I always wonder how they justify that...
