With only 8 days to move, they start looking for houses?  I'm guessing they must have some sort of temporary housing set up (can you even close on a house--or four--in eight days?).  And they haven't started packing?  Seriously?  It looked like from the previews from the next episode it was at like 4 days out they start packing.  I know they have a lot of kids to help but they also have a lot of kids to get in the way, etc.

They are either making quite a bit off that show, the housing market in Vegas is REALLY bad or they're crazy.  I do feel sorry for them though.  They shouldn't have to leave their home.

The housing market in Vegas is one of the worst in the country, if not *the* worst.

When they were getting all excited about those 2 houses in a cul-de-sac I was like "Uh, are you just going to ask the other 2 families in the houses NOT for sale to move?"  That whole scene was stupid.

I know they have said many times that money is tight etc and here they're trying to buy 4 houses and the other wives go out and spend how much on Meri's party?!?!  All I kept thinking was tie-dye your own shirts and make a couple of cakes for pete's sake.  SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I wonder, though, if TLC gives them extra money for the parties and stuff just so they have something more interesting going on? I also wonder if they're hoping TLC helps them out a bit with the housing problem...

Honestly, i just can't imagine what they're going to do. Have they sold their other house already? I guess, they probably know of other polygamous families that might be interested? Those houses that they were looking at looked really, really expensive...

I also wonder if the urgency is not because they lawyer advised them to move ASAP? I'm not sure what the timeline is on this show but it could be over a very short period of time? It's all rather confusing, I agree!

ETA: I do have to say that I feel sorry for them. It seems like a really hard situation and I wonder if they could look for a very large house that could have rooms that would easily be divide up? Or what about something like an old apt building? Although that might be really hard to find one that has all the apts empty...

I think there are two driving factors for timeline.  One the impending legal issue--they probably have been told how long until a formal decision is made to file charges.  Also, they did say they were trying to move the week in between semesters so their kids could transfer their grades smoothly.

The big move episode angered me.  I feel so bad for those children.  They didn't choose this tv show and it's ruining their lives.  I know some of their reasons may seem petty to adults, but when you're 15 years old those things matter!  They're just being exploited by Kody.  If they never did this show, I bet they would still be happily living in their home together in Utah.  The whole thing just burns me up.

I think that if we were still in an era where interracial relationships were still illegal, this show would be about an interracial couple. If gay couples living together were illegal, it would be about them. Instead, we have a polygamous family who decides that they are going to try to educate the public to see that they are normal people who aren't abusing their children and living on welfare and they get knocked for putting themselves out there.

Agreed.  I do feel terrible for their kids but I would imagine that on some level the parents feel that this is accomplishing their original goal of normalizing this--of bringing attention to the reality that if you choose to live this way you'll have to do so in secrecy.  I got the impression from the first few shows that a huge motivating factor was that their kids wouldn't have to continue to live with the secrecy--if someday they chose this life for themselves they wouldn't have to fear prosecution, etc.  Granted, I do wonder if they feel this is worth it now.  I sort of doubt they imagined what would happen.

Now that I've seen the episode I can say that I've moved like that. Without the chance to tell my friends or finish up loose ends we were gone. It was without the sense of family and togetherness though - at the very least they have that. I know that the teenagers probably don't care and they will I'm sure end up resenting their parents for a good long while they have a solid base and will adapt and be ok.

I do feel like they've either not thought the whole thing out or they just really thought that people would be more forgiving. I like Christine who said, people have changed but the laws haven't. I think you can tell that Kody is (sometimes not so) secretly excited about this move. When they were looking at house I kind of wanted to punch him in the face for the way he acted so excited about houses and pools when it was clear that some of the other wives were very distraught about the whole thing.

The rushed move episode really bothered me. It just felt like they were making HUGE decisions based on fear that may or may not have merit. I hope that there is more to the story than they shared with us...some solid evidence that Kody was going to be arrested or charged with something. Otherwise, they just caused a LOT of damage to their children based on nothing but assumptions. What would have happened if Kody had gone to the sheriff's office and said, "Hey guys, my family and I know there was an investigation. I'm wondering how much trouble we are in here. Is there any reason for me to be worried? Is there anything I can do to prevent charges from being filed?"

Maybe I am just naive, but shouldn't they have information from a reputable source that they ARE in trouble before taking such drastic, HUGE steps? The entire thing was so sad. "We are moving in three days. And you can't tell anyone." WHAT??

Then it's such a frantic move...to a vacation rental. Then another move eventually to a house. Ugh. Moves are such a big deal for kids and need to be handled with care. I just worry that the kids are going to have a hard time adjusting.

I will never understand why people subject themselves to these types of shows. Did no one learn anything from Jon & Kate?

I thought the same thing today when I scrolled past "Quints by Surprise" on TLC.  It made me think about "Raising Sextuplets" on WE that was cancelled because the wife had an affair, the husband threatened her, and now they're getting divorced.  The whole "I just want to share our story" thing is so beyond obnoxious at this point.  We know you just want money.  May as well be honest so that when it bites you in the behind we don't have to pretend to feel bad for you.

I think the problem is that the case had already been forwarded to the DA and the authorities in that town had gone on record (newspapers I think) that there was plenty of evidence to prosecute.  Once the DA filed charges, they wouldn't be able to leave.  They'd be stuck with the outcome whatever that might be.  They also wouldn't be facing a friendly jury.  Utah is a different place--particularly the area they live in which is very very conservative (unlike say Salt Lake City proper which is a bit more liberal, although not much).  My (albeit fairly limited) experience living there seemed to point to a lot of denial and ultimately taking the polygomy thing personally.  It's like a black eye they don't want to admit to and resent being brought up.  I think it's probably fairly similar to the deep south in the not so distant past on the issue of interracial marriage and children.  Just my opinion/observations though.  We are going through a legal issue with a family member (nothing even remotely like this though) and waiting for the DA to file charges is hard.  You just don't know what will happen and once it does everyone is stuck (whether you're being charged, testifying, etc.).

Ohhhh...gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know about the DA thing. That makes more sense as to why they were so "paranoid." Maybe they had good reason to be?

And it is totally possible they would have decided not to prosecute but if it were me, I don't think I'd stick around to find out--it's far too risky.

I'm sure they had a lawyer, too, advising them.

I missed the end of the episode.  I take it they got moved in alright?  Did they say anything about how they're going to sell the Utah house?

I guess I don't really understand the laws that the one wife was talking about, because only Meri and Kody are legally married, correct?  So what law was broken?  Is there a Utah law against even saying you are polygamist?

I believe Utah has law against living with another adult you aren't married to (obviously not enforced in most cases) and a law against calling someone your "wife" if you're not legally married.  Total craziness but nonetheless on the books.

The episode ended with them arriving at the vacation house, sitting down with their real estate agent to sign the lease. One of the teen girls (I forget which one) was standing in the room watching the adults sign papers. She was looking pretty downtrodden. The camera guy asked "What's wrong?" She replied "Really? I hate it here. I want to go home." Then she walked away. :(

They didn't say anything about the Utah house or show anything beyond them arriving at the house that first night.

He had said that family was going to take care of the house so I'm guessing they'll sell it once it's cleaned out.

Does anyone have a rough timeline of how long between the christmas episode when they told the kids(older ones) that they were moving & the actual move?

The kids may not like it, but kids(especially teens) don't always like what their parents decisions are.  These kids may not have liked it had they moved across town & could be acting the same way.  The kids are allowed to have their feelings & opinions but they don't get to make the decisions.

Even if they hadn't gone on TV they could have ended up being prosecuted anyhow.  More than one of the adults on the show had a parent go to jail over this.  That would have been just as traumatic(or more) than moving the kids.

A difference I see between some of the other reality shows & this one is the focus is NOT on the kids.

According to TMZ, they moved to Vegas around the 15th of January.

Robyn is due in October.  She must have found out shortly after they moved.  Poor thing has been thru a lot.

It really annoys me that they got so many flat tires.  It sounded like some could have been prevented with some basic vehicle maintenance.  The Brown's are very reactive, not proactive.  Its getting on my nerves.

I think the season is over but the one next Sunday is some sort of special I think to highlight Robyn's pregnancy.

So that was it until Fall?  We see the houses and get told Robin is pregnant and then just.....  This season was weird.  I hope they get back to regular programming if the show comes back next fall.  It was too hard to follow and stay interested with all the skipping weeks.

I was glad Robyn told Meri off camera.  That has to be hard.  I know their belief system puts such a focus on marrying and having children but I can't fathom dealing with infertility all those years and watching as one woman after another has a baby with your husband.

So DH and I were discussing it as we were watching last night and is anyone else getting the impression that as much as I don't doubt they all believe this is lifestyle is important from a spiritual perspective, they all seem quite eager to live much more autonomous lives.  Not that I blame them, I just thought it was interesting how appealing the idea of living separately seemed to be and make all the wives except Janelle happy.

I doubt Robin told Meri off camera.  I think they're just going to hold out on the footage until next season, which I think is completely lame.

I think the only reason Janelle wouldn't like living alone is that she has more responsibilities this way.  She doesn't have Christine to start dinner or watch her kids etc while she works all day.

I thought it was pretty pathetic that Meri moved a mile away from the others when something else was available close by.  Way to ostracize your DD even more.  She wanted the fancy house more than she wanted to live by her sister wives or her daughter's siblings.  I thought it was pretty selfish if she's so into this culture.

It must be a big transition for Janelle to go from being a working parent to being home with the kids. I know she's said in other episodes that she likes being a working mom.

I totally agree! I was thinking the same thing when I watched the episode! She pics a nicer house over being closer to the family? I thought their lifestyle was about family!? I wonder if their going to build another house so they all can be close together? Or why no do what they do in BIG LOVE and just get 4 houses together and open up the back yards?

The whole move was a cluster mess. I hope they build a house asap.

Anyone who knows the area, how much is the rent on those houses?

I understand the 4 houses thing but I also wonder if they wouldn't be better off financially if they would've tried 2 houses and double up Meri and Robyn with Janelle and Christine.  At least for a short period of time it seems like it would've helped them be able to move into their own home sooner.  Besides... how are they going to pay for these places if none of them have jobs?  I don't know how they're going to pull this off and it's got to be really hard on those kids who are used to being around each other all the time. greensad.gif
