I have a real problem with this. You'll want to read the whole article, but imagine if your child had been victimized and then you learnd their photos were a part of this.
Quote:
Court records do not note how many images of raped and abused children were shared or accessed while the FBI was operating “Website A.” Investigators also do not indicate whether known victims of child pornography – abused children pictured in widely distributed pornographic series – have been notified photos of their abuse were again shared as part of the investigation.

How would you feel? Would you be OK with it because it was used to catch a large number of creeps?

I would think that alterations and so on were made to the photos to protect the idenities. Its easy to photoshop and manipulate photos to not resemble the original one. Even so I don;t know how I feel about it. As a victim of sexual abuse who's abuser never got in trouble if they are catching these people then to me that is a win even if their methods are disagreeable.

Nope, not okay with it at all.

And I see no evidence that they altered any photoes. It says they continued to run an already operational website.

Not OK with it, either. Not in the least! There *has* to be another way to catch these people!

This is repulsive!  When law enforcement discovers child porn, they should make it inaccessible immediately.  Then they can use records to catch the users to the greatest extent possible.  I can understand that it might be harder to find someone from a record of his past use of an online service than if you can trace him while he's connected--it MIGHT, although from my partial knowledge of how the Internet works, I don't see how--but that doesn't justify the FBI maintaining access to child porn.

I think that if they really were not able to locate the users otherwise and this enabled them to, it justifies it. I wish we lived in a world where this was not necessary, but sadly we do not. I also could have done without the quotes from website users sprinkled throughout the article... although I guess that reinforces the caliber of people that this operation removed from the streets. I guess the flip side of "the victimization continues each time a photograph is shared" is that this prevented the victimization of countless other children.
