With my first, I got pg when he was 17 months old. He was down to just once or twice a day (and just a few, wiggly minutes at that before he was on to bigger and better things). In fact, I pushed it a little because we were going out of town and I knew that the nursing would be convenient on our trip When my nipples got sore around 6 weeks, I just stopped offering and he never asked again.

I nursed my second child until just a couple of weeks before her second birthday. I was getting really tired of it and she was down to less than once a day. One day I realized we'd gone 3 or 4 days without nursing and I decided we weren't going to go back. I think she asked twice after that and was easily distracted to something else.

Still nursing my youngest, she's only 11 months

DD self weaned at 17 months. DS self weaned at a little over 4 years old. I did have to leave DS for 3 weeks to go care for my mama when she was dying and died. . .but when I came home he continued to nurse for about 5 more weeks. I wonder if I didn't have to leave him if he would have nursed longer?!!?

DS was about 2 months away from turning 3 when he weaned. He just stopped asking completely.

Im pretty sure DD is weaned, shes 31 months. She has no interest in nursing even if I offer. Its bittersweet, I love the special time nursing allowed us but its her decision. She also decided that she wanted her own bed last month but at least she still comes to cuddle around 2-3am so I do get some cuddle time with her.

dd slowed off nursing when I was pregnant (just before her 3rd birthday) with ds but then tandem nursed for at least 18 months - and finished completely around a month after she turned 5 - or at least that was when I noticed it, ds is just 4 and still going strong - he shows no sign of stopping just now!!

I had kind of an odd situation. I had planned to EBF and led my son self-wean. (Did not work out to BF my daughter, but that's another story). Bf'ing was going great till about 8 months when DS decided he didn't like to sit still long enough to nurse. It took 45 minutes to nurse both sides, I am soooooo slow and he really had to work at getting the milk. So he'd quit and go play. He was getting fussy and starting to lose weight and I started getting concerned. So I began pumping and giving him breastmilk bottles. I did that for a month but to sit and pump for 45 minutes then sit and hold my son with a bottle for 15-20, then an hour later do it all again was getting to be too much for me. I simply could not keep up.

So I gradually tapered off and stopped, much as I did not want to do it, I figured a sane mama was at least as healthy as breastmilk.

I guess he self-weaned. It certainly was his choice, not mine!

I couldn't answer the poll because neither of my kids have weaned yet. My DD will be 3 1/2 in October, and my DS is 20 months in a few days. I am also pregnant, so I am trying to gently help my DD wean before the baby comes (I have cut her down to first thing in the morning and before bed at night). She has been nursing less and less (some days she asks to read and cuddle in the morning instead of nursing), but then there are days when she asks to nurse more (I usually can get her to drink some water or have a snack in those situations instead of nursing).
So, I guess I can't really help you out except to say that at 3 1/2 and soon to be 2, both of my kids are still nursing!

I didn't do pure CLW with my first. The amount he wanted to nurse was overwhelming and unusually excessive, so I had to cut him down for my sanity and our nursing relationship. (He has sensory quirks and would have nursed 24/7 even as a 4 year old had I let him). I did child respected weaning with him - he was a month shy of 5 years old.

My second (and third) are still nursing. My second is 3.5 years old and has followed a more normal nursing pattern. I've never felt the need to cut her down since it's always been managable. Very recently, she dropped one session so she's down to 2-3 times a day now. I would guess that she will be nursing still a year from now, but we'll see!) My third is just a baby so we're a long way off.

DS was a month past turning 5 when he tried and discovered that he'd forgotten how. He was only nursing if taking a nap, and most not napping, by then. He's now almost 19 and in culinary school.

DD was 7, was down to once/month in those last several months. She's now 10.

It is interesting to see how things change over time. When I started this poll in July, Micah was nursing like crazy! So many times a day, I couldn't count. Now he is down to 2 to 3 times per day TOTAL! AAAAAAAAAND, is sleeping through the night!!!! FINALLY!!!

36 months. In the weeks leading up to the last time she asked to nurse, she would only ask once a day, then every other day, then we were out of town and she went an entire week and it was once a week for a couple weeks. She asked to nurse on her 3rd birthday and then never again. She mentioned it once a month later, but didn't actually nurse that time.

Dd1 was 32 months and I was around 14-16 weeks pregnant when she abruptly weaned. It was a relief because I was done with nursing while pregnant. It made my skin crawl.

Dd2 is not near weaning yet. She'll be 24 months tomorrow.

My first self-weaned somewhere around 18 months. It was so gradual I didn't know it happened. Second will be 3 next week, I'm NAKing her now so who knows when she'll wean! The difference is when first was a baby I WOHFT, now I'm SAHFT.

I said early 3's but DD was 3.5.

I want my son to go at least to 3 (largely to get him through flu season) and then I might try to nudge him off. I've about had it with nursing a roving/sleepless toddler.

ETA: I did CLW w/ DD. I just don't know if I can manage that with DS if he goes much beyond 3. Must...get...sleep...

I can't quite vote yet -- we're still nursing at 30 months but I've noticed that DS has slowed way down to just a few times a day now - usually, morning, night and once or twice (very quickly) in between. A few times I've asked him if he wants to nurse and he has actually said no, and that he was busy. We've had a rough spell with food intolerances - I'm on the same diet as he is and I think my already chronically low supply (due to IGT) has dwindled due possibly to less caloric intake by me, the return of my cycles, etc. I ask him if he still gets milk and he says yes, but I don't really know. I was never able to give him more than a total of 4 ounces at a time at my PEAK production so I'm guessing he is only getting a few ounces a day.

I'm a little sad to see our nursing relationship come to an end (it was such a rough journey in the beginning but we persevered!) Weaning is all up to him but I'm also a little sad to think that our particular circumstances may have led the relationship to end a little sooner than it may have otherwise. Then again, it could be just his time though. I'm thankful for the time we've shared!

My son, 21 months, seems to have self weaned this week. He has not asked for milk in four days, which is a record. Previously he'd gone 36 hours once.

I am not sure if he truly was ready or if it has to do with me being pregnant and thus my milk changing. I night weaned him about a month ago and that may also have contributed.

I am mostly happy. All along I wanted him to lead. But it feels like such an abrupt end to me.
