Hi mamas, my 2nd son will be 12m next monday! YAY! Unfortunately, we can't seem to get him to REALLY eat anything. Well, food wise anyway, I find plenty of "solids" in his diaper but I suspect this is mostly our parrots foods as I've found him with pellets and dehydrated produce in his mouth several times a day.
But with table food, he takes it willingly or will put it in his mouth willingly, sucks on it and works it around for a bit but then spits in back into his hand. Sometimes he will put the food back in his mouth for a bit but ultimately spits it out, wipes it on himself or something else. All in all he doesn't really seem to have much of a drive for solids.
I DID wait until he was 8-9m to start table food due to my own leaky gut and certain foods like dairy (even raw and organic that I eat) will give him eczema through breast milk. I don't offer him dairy or grains, it's mostly just meats fruits and veggies, apple sauce and occasionally a little bit of rice, which he seems to really dislike. Since birth he's been EBF, on demand so he's a chunky monkey, 20# and LOTS of fat rolls ;-)
Any one have any tips, BTDT stories,, did it get better? when? How?
My son first tried solids around 8 months, but he mostly played with it or mouthed it and spit it out until he was 15-16 months. Then he started eating more. He was also EBF from birth and is still nursing now.
It sounds like your offering your son plenty of choices and he's definitely getting enough if he's such a "chunky monkey". I would say just keep offering solids, and nursing as much as you're comfortable with, until he shows more interest. He's healthy and he'll get there when he's ready.
Did your babe start w purees, more table foods? What finally seemed to interest him? I don't think it matters for mine, at least not yet. I've given him apple sauce and STILL he spits it into his hand to "examine" it and maybe it goes back in, maybe it gets smeared on something, lol. can never tell.
We never did "baby food" or purees, just gave him table foods that were soft enough or small enough for him to eat safely. He has pretty much always fed himself. When he started eating more I think it was just because he was ready, we didn't do anything differently.
I'd encourage you to continue offering various foods, let him feed himself with a spoon for applesauce and such. And don't worry about it, if he's not eating much and he's healthy then he doesn't NEED to be eating much. When he does, he will.

Thanks again! I'm not worried much, but my hubbs is. He'll eat when he'll eat, I've never seen a teenager breast feeding ;-) Yeah, I haven't done purees, the closest is some watered down smoothie in his straw sippy cup, he LOVES THAT! lol, I joked w hubbs that myabe I hsould put some chicken in the blender when I make those smoothies!
Pur?ed soups are great and like a savory smoothie. He might like that!
My 11 month old spits out a lot, too, but at least she's interested in food. My older DD too much longer to be interested in solids. She finally started by sucking down smoothie pouches a little after a year, then moved into soups, fruit and cheese.
You're absolutely right, though. If he's happy and growing, he's just fine.
Since he doesn't seem interested in food, it's not as likely to be a problem, but if he starts showing an interest and has trouble with eating then it's a concern. Things like swallowing trouble, trouble with choking.
Was he interested before 8-9 months and you held back or was he not interested and so you didn't bother to offer?
My oldest didn't show interest in food until about 14, 15 months. She weaned very early, too, and basically lived on goat milk for a while until she started solids. This had implications on her digestion, but she outgrew that. She still eats like a bird to this day, but is healthy, bubbly, and whip smart I hope your little one is thriving.
It could be that your child has a preference of wanting a different texture, so try pureeing foods or chopped up and slicing things differently. Also, I would try to vary the food choices each meal of the day. For example offer oatmeal, peaches and yogurt for breakfast...cheese quesadilla (small pieces cut up), pureed sweet potatoes and diced watermelon for lunch....and so on. So that each meal there is something to look forward to.
