This could be a can of worms but I am really ignorant and sincerely want what is okay for my little one. So inform me...My dd is 14 months old and my dh and I are going out on our first date in sooooooo long (I am very excited) on Thursday night. DD is staying with granddaddy. The place we are going is somewhere that we got a gift certificate to and they have a great wine list. I haven't had wine in so long (like 14 months + 9 months LOL) and I really love it. So could I have a few glasses with dinner. And if I do how long should I wait to nurse? Or should I just not at all? How long does it stay in milk? Anyone know? Any experience? Thanks!

Generally speaking 1 or 2 will be ok and no need to pump/dump as long as it's 1-2 hours after you had it.

The amount of alcohol in your bloodstream is equal to the amount of alcohol in your breastmilk. If you are legally drunk (.08?) you have less alcohol in your breastmilk than in a non-alcoholic beer. (I'm not saying you should get drunk, as I don't believe that a drunk parent is a responsible parent!) So, it's absolutely fine to have a couple glasses of wine and continue to nurse. If you want to be on the "safe" side, just keep in mind that the amount of alcohol in your system peaks at about 30 - 90 minutes after consumption. ONe your body has metabolized the alcohol, it's out of your breastmilk as well.

Just wanted to agree with everyone else.

I'd avoid getting wasted and immediately nursing, but a couple glasses of wine over a leasurely dinner should not be a problem.

Have fun
