|for your sinuses, you can try flushing them with a neti pot and salt water. clears all the goo out rather nicely without the drying affect of decongestants.|
Decongestants are likely to dry your milk as well, I believe.
When I had a bad sinus and ear infection when DS was 10 months, the doctor tried to prescribe a decongestant. I asked about milk supply and he said it could hurt it, so I declined. I took the antibiotics only and it cleared up in a few days....though I've since learned it probably would have cleared up in the same time frame with no drugs.
Some combination of the nasal irrigation, decongestant, buckets of water I've had to drink today, rice + salt pack and breastmilk seemed to do it.
Claritin is listed as an L1 according to Dr. Hale. L1 is the safest category for medications. It is also approved by the AAP for use in breastfeeding mothers. You doctor and nurse probably say the same thing about all medications for nursing mothers. They are not willing to look up the info and are covering their own butts.
