We're planning a lotus birth, but my question is, should I have sterile scissors and ties ready in case things don't go as planned?

Partnered mama with DD (01/04) and DD (08/09) and 8 critters, including a !

I'd say, you may as well if you can. I didn't, but there is no real reason not to if it will help you feel prepared. Now that I am thinking about it, it seems like a good idea. Your partner could always sterilize the scissors while you are in the birth process, just in case you end up wanting to cut the cord.

We didn't plan a lotus birth, but we had figured our backup midwife would come down shortly after the birth and cut the cord then, so we didn't have stuff ready. Well, we didn't end up needing to call her for quite a while, and we found that we wanted to cut the cord, so DH just used some rubbing alcohol to sterilize a sharp pair of scissors, and we used some dental floss to tie it off. No big deal, didn't take long to get the stuff ready. No problems.

sure, have them ready. esp if it will make you feel more prepared. we planned a lotus but i just couldn't deal with how short the cord was--i could barely nurse comfortably so we ended up cutting the cord a few good hours later, just grabbed some scissors we could find at the time and cleaned them. i forgot though how thick and tough the cord was!
