Hi, I'm Maureen.  I am 19 weeks preggo, due August 12.  Right now we live in New Mexico, but we will be moving to Nebraska in July.  One of only 2 states where you can't find a midwife!!!  I've heard only 1 mw, from SD, will come there.  But my labors are FAST.  My mw here and my mw in Kansas both feel I am a great candidate for unassisted.  (Baby #2 and baby #3 were born at home, this is 4.)

My main issue is a tendency to bleed after birth and b4 the placenta comes.  Last birth I just asked for a shot of pitocin after baby was out 5 minutes, and the placenta came 5 minutes later.  Dh's main concern is that dd (#2) was born not breathing and the mw had to massage her for quite awhile b4 she started breathing, and dh was really freaked out by that.

My mw from KS suggested buying the book Heart and Hands as a starting point.  ALSO, a retired doctor here gives classes in emergency childbirth to couples desiring unassisted birth, which is way cool, and we will take that in May.

Oh, and I will be doing my own prenatal care.  Our insurance is out of Nebraska and the docs here suck, plus they are out of network and so VERY expensive for any visit, and the midwife isn't covered at all, so we really can't afford to do prenatals with her.

One thing I am wondering is how to get a birth certificate in an out-of-hospital birth in a state where midwife-attended homebirth is illegal.  Anyone have experience in Nebraska?

TY for any input you might have!!!
