I just talked to my state representative about bill 2088 and he suggest I get testimony from women who do this and have had unassisted birth experience. If you have any info that could be supportive of my stance let me know. I may need you to send me some testmony. I'll let you know if anything new comes up.- Laura

Wow, I just read about this, but have not been able to read the entire bill because of my crappy computer freezing.
I didn't know you were planning to UC, congrats.
did you contact Tiahart? I have heard that he is very conservative. I too want to do something about this bill, but just don't know what I could do. I have not UC'd, so I am of no help there, but I was hoping to do UC/UP in the future and I know that this bill is terrible.
LMK what you need.

I am planning to UC this month.

I am not currently living in KS, but I grew up there, my family and my husband's family are there, we have discussed moving back (DH is in the Coast Guard, so it would be after he retires from the service), and at one point, I was considering birthing this child in KS.

I am scared of this bill passing with its current (vague) language. The "intention" of the bill is supposedly to cut down on "dumpster babies", but the phrasing right now does not allow for ONLY that intention. If that truly IS the intention, GREAT, but we need the bill to be re-written in language that will NOT threaten women's birthing choices (which it currently does/could). As the bill stands, there is a great deal of room for interpretation, which is frightening to me!

Anyway, just jumping in here to say that this bill does not currently affect me, but it very possibly could in the future (heck, like I said, I thought about returning to KS to have this babe, and can see that happening in future pregnancies if we're closer to KS). My husband and I have discussed where we would like to be transferred next (for the Coast Guard), and where we would like to "retire" to when he leaves the service. We have both agreed that as long as we are of possible-child-bearing age, we will NOT voluntarily move to a state that will restrict our choices. Sad as it makes me to say, if this bill passes as worded, KS would be out of the running for our choices (sad, b/c like I said, we both grew up there, all our family is there, but I will NOT take the chance of having my reproductive rights taken away).

I've asked my mom (a KS resident) to become active in working for change in this bill, but I don't think she will.

If there's anything else I can do, please let me know. I don't know how much effect my words will have, being a non-resident, but I can try.

Kinsey

I talked to another Representitive today and he said that it was intended to prosecute mommas who don't report if their babies die and the baby is found dead later. I showed him that the wording included just having a birth without medical assistance. I'm to e- mail my concerns and he will see what he can do to get it re-worded. I'm afriad that he was just trying to shut me up by saying that it excluded me. Obviously as it is written it does not. I'll keep you posted- Laura

Laura, please let us know the name of the representative you spoke with and the email address. I will send them an email also. Thank you for taking such initiative on this, as I said before, it is really important and for some reason I just wasn't addressing it yet.

We have all seen awesome results with letter writing campaigns... Laura could you post all the contact information and possibly a simple letter so others could easily make thier opinion heard. I think we could then post it in current events or activism and get mamas all over the country writing in and expressing thier concern.

Sorry it took so long to get back on this I have had a bad couple of days! The main thing we need for them to do on this bill is just change the wording. I talked to Jim Morrison's( Jim Morrison is the head of this commity) assistant at 785-296-7676. He gave me the e- mail addy of garyd@house.state.ks.us. I have been in contact with a lobbyist from NOW and she said that they are "working" on getting the wording correct. IMO we all should still make our voices heard. Thanks to all of you- Laura
