I did castor oil with DD and I had a qick labour. 9 hours start to finish. No mec. and no dirreahea/sickness on my end. I do think it sped my labour up too fast and didnt give DD a chance to turn but honestly it could have been a variety of things. I did sex, walking, nipple stimulation, jumping jacks , jump rope , cohosh, and was inserting EPO capsules (though much later than most people). I even stripped my own membranes. :

Banana Spermberry Smoothie coming up!

Maybe that was pushing the line of decency... : Sorry...

I dunno. I think I could stomach that more than I could in it's "natural" form...

ANYWAYS... I bought some castor oil... I might be making a castorberry smoothie for breakfast tomorrow. THAT icks me out.

The key to nipple stim for me is doing it 30 min at a time on one or both sides until it starts to make me queasy and having a few contractions. THen I stop and do it again later in the day. 3x a day seems to get it going.

In fact, it works so well, I've told DH to keep hands off there because this time I don't want preterm labor!

ETA: This was written on one of my doula yahoo groups about castor oil. I'd always thought I'd give it a try, but now I'm not so sure.

Quote:
"Castor oil has been used safely for years. It is over the counter."

Aspirin has been used safely for years. Aspirin is available over the
counter. Because a drug is available over the counter and has been used
safely in one circumstance does not mean that it is safe to use during
labor.

The castor seed contains ricin - 0.2milligrams is a lethal dose. Ricin is
twice as deadly as cobra venom. The side effects of an overdose of castor
oil include diarrhea, liver cell death, kidney failure, convulsions and
shock. So the diarrhea that results from taking castor oil is in fact one of
its toxic effects that is causing this symptom.

There has been no research done to determine a safe level in pregnancy, now
to consider the risks to mother or baby. There have been some small studies
but nothing controlled or large enough to be of real value. Some of the
small studies have found that the risk of meconium staining in babies whose
mothers used castor oil was greater, other studies have found this not to be
true.

So we have a highly toxic drug, no research of value, no information on safe
doseages and conflicting information on risks. This is an intervention.
Using castor oil to start labor is an induction. Only the mother can
determine whether or not the risks are outweighed by the benefits for her.

As others have mentioned, it is the mothers call whether or not she chooses
to use castor oil. But wrapping it up with a pretty ribbon and saying it is
ok because it is natural and not really an induction is just kidding
ourselves, and the mother! We do not know if it is safe, nor do we know if
it is unsafe. Being postdates is not a medical indication for an induction.
There is nothing wrong! An induction carried out because a woman is
postdates with no clinical signs of a problem is prophylactic - choosing to
intervene to prevent something that MIGHT happen.

I am not denying that choices can be extremely limited to women if they go
beyond 41 weeks. It may be that a woman is told she "risks out" of homebirth
because she has gone "postdates". She may decide that she is simply fed up
with being pregnant. It may be that this is a way to avoid an oxytocin
induction with pitocin. But this is still an induction. Let's at least call
it what it is.

I just read through this thread, and am wishing you the best! A friend from Japan recommended taking a really hot bath and then going to bed. This is what I did when I was late, and went into labor a few hours later.

DH checked for me and I'm dilated about 4 cm... I think. He's never checked before, but it seems that way. I'm relieved because I was afraid nothing was happening.

Contrax have been sporadic, but I'm going to drink more castor oil soon, I think. Blah... I really want this baby out by the end of the weekend. Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

Wow if you're that much dilated, have you tried doing squats? Plants the baby's head directly on the cervix. Woot! Getting close!

Okay, DH check again this morning and he thought I was definitely dilated more... Maybe 5 cms? Anyways, he was actually able to feel the baby's head which is amazing to me! I had contrax that woke me over for HOURS last night, but nothing today. I REALLY want this baby out this weekend!

OT but funny- I chugged about half a cup of castor oil yesterday early afternoon. I only went number two once, that evening and it was the most solid poo I've had in about two weeks. Weird...

Hey Kristi,

I am so inspired by you! You are doing an amazing job trusting your baby and your body! I live here in Redmond so it's soo cool to think that there is someone not far from me planning a UC! I had planned a HB with dd but transfered cause there was too many interventions JUST because my water broke! My midwife wanted to induce, and me being a trusting person, agreed but my body was not ready! It took 70 hrs to get to 6cm and I ended in the hospital with a c-section. With my next baby, I would really like to attempt an UC. But I will probly have a midwife too for backup..but good for you for sticking up for you and your baby and not crumbling to intervention! You are going to have an AMAZING birth! I just started to read your posts and I am excited to follow along and hear how everything goes!! Keep doing what your doin mama!!

Woohoo! 5 is great!
I heard that cinnamon starts contractions so with my first baby I brewed up the strongest pot of cinnamon tea.Well actually it was just hot water with cinnamon sticks and ground cinnamon as an extra measure steeped for 10 minutes.I had DS about 12 hours later.I also slurped on alot of pineapple you can add it to your "smoothie" since its supposed to have the same effect.
Easy labor vibes to you, it sounds like your humor hasn't left and that's great!

Thanks for all the supportive comments!

DH and I went to the beach to try and walk the baby out. Nothing yet, but I feel like I might've streched out a bit. DH has been checking my dilation, but the poor guy is kinda grossed out by the mucous plug which has been coming out bit by bit every few hours (and of course smells like it's been up there for 9 months... LOL) so he's not into doing it every hour like I want. I told him it was an iron twist of fate- for once I'M begging HIM to stick his hands in there and he's not into it. Lol. We're afraid this might cure his desire for sex for many, many months...

Contrax are still start and stop, but a lot stronger than before. I feel fairly confident that the baby will show up this weekend.

I'll keep you all posted!

I'm having hard contrax, but they don't stick around! DH can feel the baby's head really well now and I can actually reach my cervix now (althugh I can't tell what's going on). My tummy is super hard now and I'm still losing pieces of my mucus plug. I can't believe this kid isn't out yet! My body is totally ready!

I've been drinking cinnamon tea, pineapple juice, having sex, walking, climbing stairs and doing squats today, just HOPING something will kick this into high gear! I'm losing my mind!!!

Oh mama, you are doing such a wonderful job!! You are working so hard and you are being so patient!

Have you thought about getting accupuncture to help get your body in line ready for birth? Or even a Chiropracter can help get your pelvis in line.. I know a great one in South Everett, his Name is Dr. Chad Abrahamson and his wife had 4 homebirths!! He is actually a Nucca Chiro so his method is hardly noticable..just some ideas.. Sometimes there can be a little bit of a hang up and if you can get your body in better position, then baby just might slide right on out!!
