My daughter was born this morning, just before 5am, into my own hands after about 6 hours of labor. Yesterday was DH's birthday so he was out celebrating and my 2yr old son fell asleep around 10pm. I nursed him to sleep and that totally set off the first real contractions. I work from home and continued to work until about midnight (was scheduled til 2am) when it became hard to talk through a contraction (I answer incoming phone calls).
I laid down on the mattress I just bought today (no time to set up a whole birth nest, I just threw a shower curtain liner down and then an old blanket on top and moaned my way through each wave. I never really timed them but around 3am I called DH and asked him to come home afterall because I was worried my son would wake up and I would not be able to tend to him or reassure him that I was OK. He got here about 45 minutes later and kept asking me if we could go to the hospital now but I said no, I was fine, I was comfortable and didn't want to move.
At about 4:20 my water broke but I didn't tell DH (who was flipping through the phone book considering calling an ambulance for no other reason than he was nervous) and I got a little break from my contractions...I moved into hands and knees position and just watched and listened. Soon I had a contraction that was very pushy at the end, but I was scared, this is really it!! I was a little afraid of the pain and a little afraid of y'know, really
doing it! I was feeling just inside my crotch and could tell the head was there, a little wedge of wrinkled scalp and so I did as best I could to kind of feel all around and make sure everything was slippery and there was just no holding her back!
My body was pushing on its own and I was panting to make it slow and feel what was stretching where with my fingers, but before I knew it her head was out. I could see and feel that she was facing my back and I felt around for a cord or anything but the only thing I noticed was that her hands were right inside, so I gave a little push and out she came, the cord was long enough that I could cradle her in my arm and I just kinda touched her all over while DH was trying to believe what he was seeing, haha.
he got up to go look at a clock and grab the camera and when he came back he said it was the craziest thing he ever had seen (he was there for the birth of our son, in a birth center within a hospital BTW)
She latched on a soon as I was able to get comfortable and I could feel more contractions so I put her down and was able to push out the placenta, it took more effort than I thought it would. Then I wrapped her up in a towel and told DH to curl up and keep her warm while I took a quick shower, rolled a towel up for between my legs and then we curled up on the couch for more nursing.
I haven't yet cut the cord, the placenta is in a prefold inside a BSWW and she's got a tiny fuzzi bunz on because the meconium has already started to flow,
I just wanted to get some of this down before it starts to fade from my memory, I'll probably revise and add more later, maybe even a picture if I can get one without using the flash, it seems so mean, but she looks just like all the other newborns I've seen, like a tiny grumpy old man, ha ha.
Happy Birthday Marlowe!
