Yes, it can be. it means there was some bleeding behind the placenta while it was detaching and as long as your uterus is now firm and one or two fingers breadth below the bellybutton, and there is no excessive vaginal bleeding(shouldn't be much at all) then it's OK.

thanks!

the placenta was out within 20 min or so. how did the bleeding got so firm?

haven't checked the uterus yet, sitting in bed, holding her on my lap.

not much bleeding at all.

she's nursing a lot, so this must be a factor as well.

any idea if / when to worry?

I'd check to make sure your uterus is firm and clamped down to around your navel. If it's not, that could indicate that you've got a clot blocking the opening to your cervix and you're bleeding into your uterus. If that's the case, it will be moving up and feel 'full' and boggy. If not, then you're probably fine.

Happy Babymooning!

Aw... congratulations!!

I was bleeding huge clots a few days AFTER birthing my second daughter and that was indictive of a problem. But I don't know about clots WHILE birthing. I include the placenta as part of birthing.

hey, thanks. i wouldn't have been sneaky if they weren't so freaking huge. when nak-ing with 1 finger, it was either the clots, or the announecement

yes, i would say normal. with my UC 3 months ago, when the placenta came, i thought it came out in several pieces, but when i checked, the placenta was intact, but several large blood clots. nearly the size of my hand. placenta was perfectly intact, and membranes seemed to be too. my uterus was firm and right at about the navel. bleeding was appropriate for immediate postpartum so i didnt worry.

congrats on your babe!

wife to my awesome DH, homeschooling, unassisted birthing, food growing, life loving mama to 5 crazy monkeys. :

So your doing okay?

Oooooh! Gimmee!

Strangely enough whenever you give me labor vibes, I have contractions! They just won't stick.

I would totally take your labor pains if I could mama. I hope you feel better soon.
