DD has had a rash on her back for about a month. It started out as just dry patches and then became red a couple weeks ago. I have narrowed it down to either ringworm or eczema, but I can't decide which it is. I don't want to take her to the ped. because there are both serious flu and pertussis outbreaks in the area.

Any thoughts on how to tell them apart? I will take her to the ped after the holidays if I can't figure it out. They promised to let me bring her in early in the AM before anyone else is there....

w/ my experience ring worm is a raised reddish round patch, and eczema does not have boarders, so it is patch here and there that is not circular.

Yes that is my experience with ringworm too. I had it on my scalp once, and it is very obvious because all the patches are in the shape of rings. If this is what she has, tea tree oil is a great treatment for ringworm. I put tea tree oil on my scalp, liberally, several times a day when I had it. Was gone within a week.

Ds had ringworm and does have eczema. The difference is 'borders' (as Mona stated). Ringworm has edges, eczema is just patchy. Good luck!!!

We just came back from the ped for the exact same issue.. The ped told me that sometimes eczema can come in circular patches that look like ringworm but is not ringworm. He called it by a special name (this type of eczema) but I don't remember what it's called. My ds has what I thought was ringworm, but he assured me that it was this eczema. It does have a border, so that's why I was concerned. The ped said that ringworm on the scalp usually is accompanied by breakage of the hair which my ds doesn't have.
