I just wanted to add that I'm quite possibly having the same problem. I know that I get a rash around the lips and face at certain times when I eat tomatoes, strawberries, apples, applesauce, citrus and pineapple (big one). I only get this rash sometimes. I have it right now and have been craving salicylates like crazy since I started the vitamin c (3000 mg a day). I have been eating alot of them lately, so Im wondering if maybe that is the reason ds is stuffy nosed, coughing, wanting to nurse every 20 minutes.

Im going to continue reading the salicylates threads.... maybe I will f ind some more info on the link between cravings and vit c intake...

What kind of vitamin C are you taking? Many of them have fruit extracts and other stuff that is high sals in them...

Mama fish - Im taking Wild by nature vit. C - It has rose hips, calcium stearate, cellulose, food glaze, silica, and stearic acid.

Contains no sugar, starch, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, corn, soy, yeast, wheat, grain, gluten, egg or milk.

I failed the zinc test, so I will now be supplementing with zinc (thanks for the suggestion whome)...

Also started B-12 today

Update on the mold: the mold people came to my house last night - I have some pretty bad mold. It's not the toxic mold, but its a type of mold that can cause allergies and weaken the immune system extensively (aspergillus). We will be working on taking care of it in the next few months. Thanks to all of you, me and ds immune system is getting better and we hardly got sick even though they were pulling up carpets and mold spores were all over. (hope Im not speaking too soon.)

Next on my list: Finding grains to make coconut milk kefir!

Oh - and I have a question: Are the magnesium baths ok for DS (1 year)? It says on the back of the epsom salt not to bathe a child under 6 in the salts... I have been bathing him in them and haven't noticed anything ...

Ok so Ive been making bone broth once a week. I have some questions:

-Are you supposed to leave the meat in the broth or strain it out?

-Also, I have been cooking it for 48 hours like Pat suggested in a thread... Is it supposed to smell "oily"?

-After you skim the ugly brown stuff off the top, do you skim it again to remove the layer of "oil" off of it?

Question about Sue Greggs blender batter:

- I tried it but the batter was thin and wouldn't turn in to pancakes. We didn't want to waste it, so we just ate the cooked pieces of batter! I m pretty sure I followed the directions correctly, except I added blueberries... Are they supposed to be thin like that?

Just posting this here for future use: (from whome in sals thread)
sals are detoxed by sulfate, yeah? And people who are sensitive to them likely have a sulfate deficiency. The question is why. In order to get sulfate, you need dietary sulfur, and you need to be able to convert it. If you can't convert it, you end up with a sulfur sensitivity *and* a sulfate deficiency. That pathway needs Mo/B6. If you can convert it just fine but you're not eating enough sulfur, you'll still end up with a deficiency. And it seems like some people don't use their sulfur well - I seem to need a *lot* of sulfur. I think that's yet another broken pathway, but that one is a lot more individual.

Wow - I just read on the thread "methinks the culprit is sals" that supplements with rose hips are high in sals. My vit c has rose hips. Now I know the reason for this rash all over my face that has been getting worse every day!
So.... do I stop taking the vitamin C while I look for one that has no corn, soy, wheat, dairy and sals? May I ask what vit c sup you are taking?

3. Vitamins
How do I find vitamins that do not contain salicylates?
" Herbal supplements and "natural" vitamins have plant ingredients in them that are thousands of times stronger than you would get in a normal food amount. That's why you can't use them in vitamins. To find OK vitamins, avoid the word "Natural" on the label and look for plant extracts, oils, or gels on the list of ingredients. One pesky source of salicylate in supplements goes by several names. It's called bioflavonoids, but it includes rutin, hesperidin, and quercitin. So if you see any of those on a vitamin or supplement label, you can't use them."

Here is a vitamin caution:
A. No bioflavinoids, rose hips, flavonoids, rutin, quercetin.
B. No plant oils, gels or extracts (such as ginseng, kava kava, alfalfa)
Ingredients such as the ones following are fine.
Vitamin A, Vitamin C***, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron, Zinc.

***In choosing your Vitamin C buy one WITHOUT *Rose Hips* as this is a salicylate

It has been slow going for me because of finances and the possibility of ds reacting to something in supplements. I wanted to keep track of how ds and I are doing with the supplements and the nutrient rich diet.

Here is my update:

Currently taking:
2000 iu vit d daily
8000 mg vit c daily (with bioflaviniods)
zinc 50 mg
b-12 1000 mcg

I am doing well with the zinc supplementation. I recently did the zinc test again with zinc sulphate. My zinc levels are returning to normal, because it tasted bad to me. Previously, it tasted like water, so I know I'm getting there! I just don't want to over-zinc because it can deplete copper levels.

daily diet:
2 cups of baby green spinach
half a cup chickpeas or red kidney beans
handful clover sprouts
2 pints blueberries (yes, I eat alot of blueberries)
1 apple
1 avocado
handful raw pumpkin seeds
2 cups cream of buckwheat cereal
half cup broccoli
brown organic rice
coconut milk ice cream with flax seeds
lots of sea salt
lots of Bubbies sauerkraut (especially good on chicken, which I usually have a hard time digesting)

The raw spinach is REALLY helping me. It has been so beneficial, but I keep feeling that I need to eat MORE of it. There's just only so much raw spinach you can eat though. Maybe I will try a folic acid sup next. Or start making green juice more often. Problem is, it gets so expensive. I use a whole container of spinach (5.99) 2 organic apples (3.00) 2 organic pears (3.50) and that lasts 2 days for the family. 50.00 a week just on juice.

ds and I just started coconut milk kefir today, made by turtle mountain. I called to ask if there was corn and they said no. I still feel I might have had some kind of a reaction to it b/c (and sorry to get so graphic but) my stool was mucosy after I drank it...

I made the bone broth twice and Im not sure I liked how it came out. I think I cooked it too long. Pat says she cooks hers for 48 hours! I tried leaving mine on the stove for 2 days, but for some reason it didn't come out that great. All I used was a turkey leg and some back pieces cut especially for soup. Anyway, it ended up sitting in the fridge for 2 weeks - until I finally threw it out!

Soooo my goals for the next week is to :
- start soaking the brown rice before we eat it
- find out if the turtle mountain kefir is making me sick (test)
- possibly start on a folic acid or folate supplement (or one that has both like whome posted about)

goals for the near future:
- try to get some water grains
- try the bone broth again... maybe a different recipe
- try a recipe from sue gregg
- do some research on nettle infusions and get started on taking them

Other question: does anyone know the effect of VOC's on nutrients in the body? I know that inhaling VOC's create a kind of "estrogen" in the body. I'm wondering if this extra estrogen has to be removed by certain processes which depletes certain nutrients... Maybe this is a question for Whome.

Ds and I have been sleeping on an air mattress which stinks of plastic... that's why I ask...

yeah, sorry, I'm not much help on that one. If you want to point me to a link that talks about VOCs and estrogen, I'll see if anything jumps out at me, but I'm trying to generally cut down my time on the computer

I try to limit my time on the computer too, so I know how hard that is. I usually get on when ds is napping, instead of doing other needful things.

I can't find the original article that talks about voc's containing xeneoestrogens which mimic estrogens in the body. I did pull up this very informative piece which answered part of my question.

But I'm still wondering what nutrients the body has to use up to detox from the xeneoestrogens. I think you will find the piece interesting. In the meantime, I will look for that original article.
