o.k., so I'd like to start supplementing with folate for 2 of my kids with allergies and the baby with down syndrome and me.
I don't know which one.....I was looking at both from thorne's and also how much would I give them??
should I ask the dr. to check ds's folate, homocytein levels ?( ds with down syn)
how do I check for mthfr? homocystein levels for me ?is their a test I can order online?
I don't have ins. right now so if I don't have to pay a dr. and can order atest myself....all the better.

Checking folate and homocysteine levels might tell you something if they're out of range, but my folate levels were firmly within range even though I saw a huge difference by supplementing folate (and then they went to the high end of the range)

MTHFR is a gene test. My insurance covered it, but it was on the order of $1000. If you wanted to go your own route, 23andme tests a huge number of genes, MTHFR included, but you might get more information than you bargained for (they test things like the breast cancer gene and other disease things as well). They're about $500. There's also Yasko's gene test, but I think it's considerably more expensive for less information.

As far as folate dosage, I'd start in the range of the RDA, watch for changes, and play around with higher or lower until you find something that seems right.
