We had been using earth balance for baking, soups and grilling sandwiches before we had to pull corn. Is there another product out there, or are we looking at coconut oil at this point?

I love coconut oil for all those things! Have you tried it? It's so lovely in baked goods and for grilling sandwiches.

I used olive oil for grilling sandwiches, coconut oil for eggs (make them taste buttery), palm shortening mostly for baking (though use some of the oils there too, depending on the recipe.

I have not tried it--does it taste like coconut? That's what I am afraid of.

Good idea w/ spectrum! Expensive, but it definitely works.

If you're looking for something that is more of a margarine substitute (like for spreading on toast or pancakes), Spectrum Naturals Spread is a great alternative. It has xanthan gum, citric acid, and natural butter flavor (non-dairy) in it, all of which can sometimes be made from corn-derived ingredients, but I called and they assured me that in this product, corn-derived ingredients are not used. Their xanthan gum and citric acid are not corn derived or they have no corn proteins in them? There could be a big difference for corn intolerant people. If it's true, I'll go buy some.... Uh, never mind, the soy protein in there makes it a big no for us regardless of it. But I'd still call and find out for sure what they ARE derived from.

Neither one -- no protein and not corn-derived, according to the customer service person. Spectrum is a company that focuses on foods for allergy/intolerant people so I believe them. Plus, DS is corn intolerant and gets diarrhea/bloody stools when I have even a small amount of corn and has been fine with me eating this. But yes, there is soy, so that eliminates it for some ppl. I just had a hard time finding something dairy/corn free and was thrilled to find this!

I thought that smart balance had a spread available that was both dairy and corn free? A friend of mine has a dd that has multiple allergies (dairy,corn,soy,etc..) and that is what they use.

I looked on their website, and their spreads all have "natural flavor". On the organic one, they have in parentheses "(derived from corn)", but it doesn't say that on the others... I would question if the "natural flavor" in the others also is derived from corn... something to call and ask, I guess.

What about ghee? It tastes quite a bit like regular butter if you add salt to it....

We use and really like Shedd's Willow Run margarine. My dd is allergic to corn and dairy and she has done well. We only use it on things she really likes the butter flavor on, for recipes we use Spectrum Shortening, which I think has been mentioned.
