I am being quoted $450 and I think that's nuts.

OMG! My insurance covers all but a tiny little bit of it. I had no idea it was that much. :

That doesn't sound right.

yeah, the dude at my HMO told me the reason they don't cover it is because it's not that much, he doesn't get why my dentist wants me to pay $450.

I think your dentist must have dealt drugs in college or something.

I would be looking for a new dentist, it sounds like he's gigging you on the price big time.

Mine is free for anything I guess I'm lucky. Even for a cleaning if you want...I guess some people are really panicky about it and it helps you relax. I had it when I had my root canal but prefer not to have it because it makes me hypersensitive to pain

*sigh* how sad is it when my HMO is the one looking out for me in this situation?

My dh says $400 will buy you a complete nitrous oxide set up for your car (apparently race car guys use it?)

You're being ripped off.

My dentist doesn't charge anything either, it's included in the cost of whatever procedure I'm having (even a cleaning although I don't need it for a cleaning).

Well this is just lovely. I called and asked the woman in the billing dept why it was going to be so much $$ if I were to use the nitrous. Told her that everyone I spoke with including my HMO, a dentist friend from another state and a local dental hygienist (who doesn't take my ins) all cannot understand why their office charges hundreds more than anyone else. her response? "I think you should find a new dentist it's obvious you don't trust your dentist here, even over some person over the phone at an insurance company when they aren't a dentist."

nice.

so now to beg my HMO to allow me to get a second dental exam within one calendar year so that I can get my work done at another office.

You could probably buy it off the street for much less. Call your dentist and ask him if he will let you bring in your own.
