Our dentist doesn't like to pull teeth, which I'm glad for.  But he just told us that he thinks ds (almost 7) would be a good candidate for dental expanders since his mouth is so small and he has permanent teeth coming with no where to fit.  I've found a lot that discusses the top/upper expanders and I think I'm ok with that, but what about the expanders for the lower jaw?  How do they work?  Are they successful?  I'd love to hear anything you know upper or lower!

I'd like to bump this because my 6 year old has significant lower tooth crowding, his dentist is suggesting orthodontics with possible extraction, and I am interested to know others' experiences with less interventive approaches to this problem.

Thanks!

P.S. Also interested in ALF, cranio-sacral, nutritional, and other alternatives to surgery.

My dd, now 18 had a cross bite. When she bit down, instead of her jaw closing one over another it shifted to one side ecause even her baby teeth were crowded. When she was 4 we were told that1) we could expand then because her jaw/palate were expanding quickly, we could wait and do 2 stages of orthadontia or we could grind down her canines. We chose to expand early. That way we could do it slowly and we knew her compliance would be good because she was still so young. She wore it for about 6 months with good success. She got full braces at 12 and got them off at 13.5 because there was plenty of room for her teeth to move.

I know there are more natural ways of doing it now and if I had known then, I probably would have given them a try. But at this point I have no regrets and she doesn't really even remember it. But I do have a tiny purple with silver glitter expander :-)

We did go ahead and get the expanders for ds.  So far they do seem to be working and ds has no complaints.  He even reminds me when they need to be tightened.  The dentist is still considering an extraction, but it would only be on a baby tooth that isn't loosening.  I'm not sure about that yet, but things are definitely moving!
