ds wears grownup shoes. we have all of our shoes (well most of our shoes) in the front hall because we are a shoe free house. he normally just goes over and picks ones he wants to wear and walks around (usually falling on his face once or twice in the process)
i got mine real kids' ballet shoes, pink, natch. they are perfect! mine is oct. 06 and needs some help to put them on occasionally but overall not too hard. got them on ebay.
I found DD1 some silver glittered mary-jane style party shoes at Target this year, that she wears for dress-up all the time. They're flat, so they're safe, but they're all sparkly so she feels like a princess when she wears them.
Another idea is to offer a pair of your own shoes. I have a pair of mules that my kids LOVE to try on. They're flat and slip on easily, but they're big, so they feel like they're being "grown-up" when they wear them.

Same here, though I don't mind the $2 plastic heels on occasion (we don't do branded princesses, but I am not opposed to the glittery plastic crap shoes ever so often
).
We did the same thing as Llyra, but the shoes were red. It was end of season and they were on clearance.
I'd say, take a trip to a thrift store & buy several pairs of various weird shoes. You could use fabric glue or rubber cement or hot glue to attach sparklies, flowers, tiny plastic animals...
I also got my nearly 3yo DD tap shoes from a thrift store. They are 2 sizes too big and easy to slip on but stay on well enough to stomp around the house and yard. She LOVES them
My SIL gave us cute ballet slipper style dress up shoes as a gift. They are Fancy Nancy brand which is sold at Target. My sister gave us hand me down plastic high heels and they went directly into the Goodwill bag
I don't mind the whole Disney princess thing but think heels for little kids is crazy.
